So this is my first 2010 NFL Mock Draft, things are certain to change as underclassmen still have four more days to declare, we still have the Senior Bowl, and the NFL Scouting Combine to go. Not to mention the actual draft is more than a three months away, and we still must navigate free agency.
1-11-2010 NFL Mock Draft
#1 St. Louis Rams-QB Jimmy Clausen Notre Dame
Sure Ndamukong Suh gets all the hype, but this is a team that needs a franchise QB. It seems logical that the Rams will sit back and wait for one of the top QB prospects to impress them enough to select them with the first pick. Right now that seems to be Jimmy Clausen from Notre Dame
#2 Detroit Lions-DT Ndamukong Suh Nebraska
The Lions are a team that needs defense. They must improve their pass rush, and they must build a defensive unit that can actually stop an offensive attack.. Suh is all of that wrapped into one, and the guy from which a Lions defense can be built around.
#3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers-DT Gerald McCoy Oklahoma
DT is the top need of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and I would fully expect them to try and trade up to the #1 spot and select Suh. Failing that most scouts have McCoy rated just behind Suh, and he would provide the Bucs the inside presense that have lacked since Warren Sapp left.
#4 Washington Redskins-OT Russell Okung Oklahoma State
More than likely the Redskins will look at a QB, but a new regime may give Jason Campbell one more shot, and provive him with a few new tools to make his job a little easier. Okung gives him protection, and will help open holes for RB Clinton Portis
#5 Kansas City Chiefs-OT Trent Williams Oklahoma
OT seems to be their primary need, and Williams looks to be a great one. Since he moved to LT for the Sooners, this would allow the Chiefs to move Branden Albert to move to LG or to RT. Albert strggueld in his second season, so a change may need to take place
#6 Seattle Seahawks-S Eric Berry Tennessee
This is a case of need versus talent. The Seahwaks cold use OL help, but with the top two off the board, Berry is not only an exceptional talent, but a great value pick. They need DB help, and he certainly provides that
#7 Cleveland Browns-DE Derrick Morgan Georgia Tech
The Browns could use a few offensive playmakers, but with no sure bet there, they can address their defense with one of the best DE prospects in this draft.
#8 Oakland Raiders-DE Carlos Dunlap Florida
Dunlap’s DUI arrest likely dropped his draft stock for 31 of the 32 NFL teams. The Raiders have been known to embrace players like this and they need to upgrade their pass rush.
#9 Buffalo Bills-QB Dan Lefevour Central Michigan
The Bills need a QB, and why not take one who knows what it is like to play in the cold. Lefevour is one of the few QB prospects in this draft that has no serious questions, and no surgeries. His only minus is going to a small school, but he could help the Bills a lot.
#10 Denver Broncos-Sergio Kindle DE-LB Texas
For our purposes we are saying the Broncos won the coin flip between them and the Jaguars. Since the top two DE and DT are off the board Denver uses this pick to address their 2009 failures to stop the run over the second half of the season. Kindle fits their defensive scheme, and will help in that area.
#11 Jacksonville Jaguars-QB Tim Tebow Florida
For the Jaguars this is pruely a business decison. They will use Tebow to sell tickets in his home town. They likely will also a develop a Wild Cat scheme for him to run.
#12 Miami Dolphins-WR Golden Tate Notre Dame
While the Dolphins need help on the defense, they could also use an upgrade for their collection of third option wide receivers. It seems likely that they will try and trade for Joshua Cribbs, and by drafting Tate they would have a legtimate #1 receiver.
#13 San Francisco 49ers-CB Joe Haden Florida
Every team could use a shut down corner, and Haden was the key to the Florida Gators smothering defense. He is also the clear cut number one CB prospect in this draft.
#14 Seattle Seahawks-QB Sam Bradford Oklahoma
The Seahawks have a lot of needs, but one of the upper teir QB prospects is going to fall here, and that may be to tempting to pass up.
#15 New York Giants- S Taylor Mays USC
The Giants need help on defense, they have a number of overpaid guys who couldn’t get it done in 2009. Adding a player with the skill set of Mays really goes a long way toward a partial rebuild.
#16 Tennessee Titans-DE Everson Griffen USC
DE is their top need, and Griffen has the pass rush skills to improve one of the biggest holes on the Titans roster.
#17 San Francisco 49ers-OT Bryan Bulaga Iowa
I may be higher on this kid than most, but he comes from a school that has been known to prodcue top OT talent.
#18 Pittsburgh Steelers-OT Anthony Davis Rutgers
The Steelers neglected the OL last year, and it struggled again in 2009. Sure Big Ben may hold the ball to long at tiems, but adding Davis to the mix might be a big help.
#19 Atlanta Falcons-CB Patrick Robinson Florida State
CB is heir top need, and Robinson is one of the better CB prospects for this draft. He has the strength to battle with receivers that the Falcons need.
#20 Hoston Texans-OG Mike Iupati Idaho
The Texans need help on the O-line, and many consider Iupati to be the best Guard prospect in the 2010 Draft
#21 New York Jets-DE Greg Hardy Ole Miss
The Jets have done a good job filling their holes, and adding a player like Hardy could help their defense remain on an elite level
#22 Baltimore Ravens-WR Dez Bryant
The Ravens have a QB with a rocket of an arm, and Derrick Mason’s career in Baltimore may be at an end. Even through a NCAA suspension Bryant reamins one of the top WR prospects in this draft
#23 Cincinati Bengals-DT Brian Price UCLA
The Bengals have had a good defense, but injuries late in the year have expsoed their lack of depth. Price is great agsint the run, and can rush the passer.
#24 New England Patriots-OLB Sean Weatherspoon Missouri
The Patriots must upgrade thier pass rush, and improve their defense all together. Weatherspoonis a higly rated OLB, and shold help this team accomplish both.
#25 Arizona Cardinals- ILB Brandon Spikes Florida
The idea here is that current LB Karlos Danby will be price himself off the Cardinals with his ablity to play all three LB positions. Therefore the Cards would need to find a replacment for him. The way this mock draft has shuffled out they get Spikes, one of the top LB prospects in this draft.
#26 Green Bay Packers-RB CJ Spiller Clemson
The Packers could use a big time speed back, and even though they have Brandon Jackson. If Spiller is there at 26 they would have a hard time passing him up.
#27 Philadelphia Eagles-RB Jahvid Best Cal
At some point the Eagles will need to draft Brain Westbrook’s repalcement. If Best is still aruond at 27 that time could be sooner rather than later
#28 Dallas Cowboys-ILB Darryl Washington TCU
Even though Bradie James and Keith Brooking hae played very well in 2009, James is 34 and is likely to end his career in the coming seasons, finding his repalcement would be very nice. Washington went to school in Texas and is a very highly rated prospect
#29 Minnesota Vikings-QB Colt McCoy Texas
Brett Favre is not going to be here very much longer, maybe one more year or two, so the Vikings should do what the Packers did draft his repalcement and let him learn, and find out if McCoy’s arm is ok after the BCS title game
#30 San Diego Chargers-RB Jonthan Dwyer Georgia Tech
All signs point to a LT2, this team will need a repalcment for LT sooner rather than later, and Dwyer seems to be that kind of a player.
#31 New Orleans Saints-DT Terrance Cody Alabama
The Saints down the stretch showed their need for some depth on the D-line. Cody is a disrupter and a mountain of a prospect.
#32 Indianapolis Colts-DT Marvin Austin North Carolina
Fili Moala was drafted last year to help stop the run, and take some pressure of Dwight Freeney, but they still need to upgrade the interior of their D-line
