#10 – Little Space
Though rat’s require a multi-tiered cage they don’t require a lot of space (especially the smaller breeds, like the fancy). They work great for people who live in apartments or older children and teenagers who need to keep their pet in their bedroom.
#9 – Cleanliness
Rats are naturally very clean creatures. Not only do they keep themselves clean but they organize their cage to keep it clean also. One place for food, one for water, one for pee and one for poop. They’ll often have multiple places to sleep and play depending on the size of cage.
#8 – No Stench
Nothing against mice, ferrets and gerbils, they all have great characteristics, but they smell. Rats don’t carry the same musk that ferrets do and their excrement isn’t especially strong smelling like a mouse’s is. If the cage is kept properly cleaned, a rat and their home, will not smell strong – even in small spaces.
#7 – “Crate Trained”
A rat won’t typically do their business just anywhere – maybe due to their natural cleanliness and organizing. Of course if kept out of their cage too long or at the wrong moment they may have an accident but it’s not common.
#6 – Social
Rats love to be around other rats. Males get along fine with other males and females with females. (The genders get along well together, but unless you plan on responsibly breeding – you can’t mix them.) They also love to be around many different people and even other kinds of animals.
#5 – Easily Tamed
Rats aren’t inclined to skittishness or to bite. Like any animal if they are afraid or in danger (like they are being squished) they will bite. The more a rat is handled the tamer they are going to be.
#4 – Smart
Rats are smart. They may have very small heads but they really use their brains because they are easily equivalent to a dog or cat in the intelligence department.
#3 – Silky Tails
Myth 1: a rats tail is bald. Truth 1: A rats tail is covered in very short, fine, hair. Now if you run your finger backwards on their tail it will feel prickly. You may also get bit – because it hurts! It is similar to a human being getting their fingernail pushed backwards – ouch! Myth 2: a rats tail is scaly. Truth 2: The hair on their tail is very silky. It feels nothing like a snake or lizard, it isn’t rough at all.
#2 – Tricky Trick
Rats are great at learning tricks. Ever seen the movie Green Mile? It was a small fancy rat that played the mouse in the Green Mile. So if you want a pet that you can teach to sit, play dead, fetch, and roll things around, a rat may just be for you.
#1 – Sugar and Spice
It applies to the males as well as the females of course; rats have very sweet personalities. Their friendliness is comparable to a dog. They like to lick, give kisses, cuddle, and they will always be cheerful to see a loving master.
**Please remember to always research a pet’s needs and the cost to care for them before obtaining a new pet.
