Okay listen up. It was a bad week, these things happen. Lets not start shifting blame or calling voters stupid or any of that. The fault lies within ourselves. Now we have to ask ourselves, what got us here and how do we make a comeback?
First, what got us hear. We promised full disclosure in our health care deliberations and what do we do? Hide behind closed doors and draft a huge bill and then ask legislators to vote on it before they had a chance to read it. Kind of tricky and at the time I snickered and smirked but now I know better, shouldn’t have done that, not cool. To top it off when we met with resistance we just simply cut sleazy deals and made our own kind look foolish and embarrassed. Another thing on health care, is it so bad to work with the opposition? Republicans are ALWAYS reaching across the aisle looking to work things out, heck they even brag about it when they run for reelection. And what was the rush again in that this had to be done short of a year, was there a special record we had to break? What are we the NASCAR party or something?
The other thing is lets finally stop talking about Sarah Palin, okay, can we do that please? We didn’t see the other side going on and on and on about John Edwards after he lost, did we? What are we so worked up about? Yes she’s dumb unqualified, all those things, so what, she LOST. She’s not in power WE ARE! Boy did we blow it in this area, why? Because the not so political middle ground doesn’t get it. To them she looks like a honest hard working family mom who cares about her country. You think we can win them over by saying vicious things about her and her family? Conservatives get an attractive smiling figure and we end up with a stupid jerk of her daughters ex-boyfriend and Letterman jokes. If you didn’t know any better who would you pick?
Another big blow to our cause was disparaging the common person at town hall meetings. Maybe they were just plain working class Americans after all that didn’t like what we were doing. Perhaps we should have listened a little. I know we’re the smartest people in society but sometimes listening isn’t so bad once in a while. That we made accusations that it was all fake (can’t believe we did this) and conservatives were behind it, not a good thing. And that Nazi tactic thing we accused them of…a little over the top. Bad idea.
Now I know some of you are going to get upset over this but I must make this plea. Let’s call a moratorium on the use of the word racist, what’ya say? How does it look when senator Reid talks about “Negro dialect” and then we go on defending him, this after we accuse any Republican of racism after only sneezing black? And wasn’t it so classy of us to dismiss the Tea party movement as— guess, three guesses—that’s right, racist? Are there any other words we can use, come on, don’t a lot of us do crossword puzzles? Keith Olbermann tried to help us out the night before the senate election in Massachusetts by characterizing Scott Brown as—guess, three guesses….racist. Surprise! That’s right, the Republican candidate was a racist. We lost…gee wonder why?
