For 100 years, the United States dominated the world’s political, military, economic, scientific and cultural stage. Beginning with the Spanish American war, the United States ended Spain’s empire in the Atlantic and Pacific and gave it a predominant political position. America’s involvement in the World Wars and being first to develop nuclear weapons put in a predominant military position. Being the only major power that was not destroyed in the second world war gave the United States total economic domination. Being the first to land on the moon gave in scientific domination. Musical artists from Elvis to Michael Jackson gave it cultural dominance.
Weak Presidents such as Jimmy Carter, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama have damaged our political credibility. Misadventures in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan as well as our failure to prevent the 9/11 attacks destroyed the illusion and showed the limitations of military power. Our economy is still the largest, but losing ground to China and India. Our cultural influence is fading as other countries grow their own pop star industries, for example as in India who’s “Bollywood” creates more movies than Hollywood. The current depression seems to have completely ended America’s dominance with the collapse of the dollar.
While America has apparently moved away from Capitalism, other countries such as China, India and Russia have moved toward it. It is no surprise that their economies are growing while our has faltered. Some liberals believe that it is because they are “developing:” countries and have more catching up to do and this is why they are growing more than us. That is wrong. Nothing fundamental has happened with the populations or raw materials that would explain that. What has changed is their embracing more Capitalist style economics.
If America’s days are over, who will replace her as the leader of the world?
China is tyrannical and undemocratic. Such countries will not long endure. India is too stuck in tradition and caste systems to really make progress. You can not progress unless you have McDonalds.
Russia has attempted but failed to institute a democracy or republic. It might have the best chance to become the new America. Russian values are more conservative than America’s. Abortion is outlawed, religion is taught in school, students are taught the truth about Marxism being a bad thing, children are not indoctrinated with homosexuality, there are no “thought crimes”, private property is more respected, there is no racism, and they have a flat tax. This comes from Pravda http://english.pravda.ru/opinion/columnists/111658-3/ so it is debatable. Their democracy and legal process is questionable and their intervention in other countries is as almost as bad as America’s.
These countries have stolen our secret weapon. Not nuclear or space technology, but the economic model of capitalism. And I hope they stay on that road and not only steal Capitalism, but that other great American invention called Freedom. And maybe their success will lead us back to our roots.
America was counted out before and we always came back. We were told that Germany and Japan would defeat us militarily and then economically. We were told that the European Union would defeat us economically. That didn’t happen. Germany, Japan and the European Union took leftists turns and we elected people like Reagan and Clinton who gave us strong economies again.
Obama’s defeats with the recent results in New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts give me hope. There will be no healthcare bill, no more socialization beginning now. In 2012, a new American leader will hopefully emerge that will embrace the spirit of capitalism and champion the cause of liberty. The great strength of the American Republic is that we can survive a Bush or an Obama. In fact, hopefully, if nothing else, Bush and Obama have shown us that the road to socialism is a disaster.
As Ronald Reagan said, America’s best days are yet to come.
