There are currently around 1000 chiropractors in Oregon, each of these practitioners have a slightly different style of practice. A local chiropractor agreed to an interview with the Portland Science News Examiner. This chiropractor is Dr. Gonzzo Watson of Watson Chiropractic in West Linn. Dr Watson has a traditional practice at his office in West Linn and also does sports chiropractic for various teams.
The first question to address is what is chiropractic? According to Dr Watson “Chiropractic is a healthcare system, which utilizes methods to detect and correct spinal subluxations.” A subluxation is a misalignment of a vertebra, this misalignment can cause a number of different symptoms depending on who you speak with but according to Dr Watson the primary interference this causes is in the function of the nervous system.
Many times a chiropractic clinic’s website says that they treat a disorder or condition, for example the Pure Life Clinic’s claim that “Neurological conditions such as headaches, neuritis (inflammation of any part of a nerve, other than the nerve root), and radiculitis (inflammation of a nerve root as it exits the spine) are the most commonly treated neurological cases in the chiropractic profession.” Dr. Watson however, holds firm to the stance that “It is not accurate to think of chiropractic care as a treatment, or cure, for a specific symptom. Chiropractic care does not treat or cure disease, infirmity, or maladies.” This is a vastly different approach than the Pure Life Clinic’s claim that specifically mentions treatment. Instead Dr. Watson asserts that chiropractic “assists the body to heal itself naturally, by removing interference to the main controlling and coordinating system of the body – the nervous system.”
This duality underlies a problem in finding a chiropractor that follows what the research has shown to be effective. The safety of chiropractic relies on the practitioner to be up to date of the current research in his or her field. Dr. Watson, in a discussion about the safety of chiropractic care, discussed the different ways to decrease the risk for complications. One of these methods is to look at the factors that raise the risk of a problem, for example a stroke risk. Patients with diabetes, over 60, or heart disease need to be screened for potential trouble. This screening helps ensure that care can be modified to fit with the patient’s health.
