Nothing In Vain – Interview
Formed out of Even the Score, Nothing In Vain represents a clarion call for a return to raw hardcore punk music.
Their passion about music shows through as they discuss the current Burlintgon music scene as well as what motivates them in their own music. So if you are tired of the tired old songs on the radio, you need to check this band out and experience music that isn’t stamped out on the assembly line of the commercial music industry.
Below is a recent interview with the band.
Please list: band member, instrument, age, and hometown?
Collin, guitar, 20 years, from Elmore, VT.
Paul, vocals, 20 years, from Charlotte, VT.
Ryan, bass, 20 years, from Essex, VT.
Matthew, drums, 20 years, from Morrisville, VT.
First of all can you give a brief background of the band for people who haven’t heard of you yet?
Nothing In Vain evolved out of a band Paul started years ago, Even the Score. We play hardcore music the way it was meant to be heard.
Describe your band in three words?
Buttery, Nazzzty, Hardcore.
Describe the current Burlington music scene… and your part in it.
Alright, here we go…there’s a pretty good following for the local scene, but most of the local bands are short lived. Whether it’s due to the bands lineups consisting of seasonal college kids or people being trendy and not committed, we cannot say, but short lived is something we are striving not to be. The scene is kinda segregated… everyone knows each other, and in a way, if you don’t know people they won’t let you in. People have their own groups, and keep to themselves. It’s a shame because everyone is welcome at our shows. The hardcore scene should unite… kids into heavy music should stop being so segregated. Anyone who appreciates this music and isn’t slave to what the radio is playing belongs at our shows, instead of segregating themselves based on trivial differences.
What songs are most played on your iPod, etc.?
Ryan – Tails From the Third World by Hocico
Paul – Life In Shambles by Cruel Hand
Collin – Portrait Of A Goddess by Bleeding Through
Matthew – Still Ill by The Smiths
Biggest musical influences?
Terror, Cruel Hand, Metallica, Sick Of It All, Black Flag, Bad Brains, Everytime I Die, Comeback Kid… CrowfeatheR?
What can someone who has never seen you live before expect from your live show???
A lot of energy, copious amounts of fun, and spankings.
Do you have any pre-show or post-show rituals that you partake in???
Definitely tailgaiting and Bar-B-Q before every show…..Ryan getting really wasted, Paul NOT getting wasted cause he’s straight edge, Matt requires an hour in a hot tub set at precisely 112 degrees and Collin covering everything in Duct tape.
Who writes, what is the process?
Its a community effort, a few songs are reincarnations of old Even The Score material, but for the most part the writing process is equal contributions from each member.
What should people take away from your music?
That people should be aware! Just realize that we’re all wage slaves to the government and to the huge multi-national corporations that dominate it.
Tell me about a band that sounds nothing like you, yet is still a large influence on your music.
Johnny Cash. He was an old school bad ass who wrote some excellent music. He had a lot of really raw lyrics also.
What do you feel is your strongest song to date and what is it about it that makes it the strongest?
“Control Their Minds (I’ll Keep Mine)”
It has a good progression, we all love the way it sounds, its fast and mean, and we’ve got something to say with the lyrics.
What drives/motivates you as a band?
We are all extremely passionate about music and just want to write and play really raw hardcore punk.
Can people buy your music anywhere as of yet?
No. We will be recording our demo soon though and will have them available to buy at shows.
What band have you most enjoyed playing with? Who do you aspire to play with?
We love playing with other locals! We’ll play with anyone… (that’s what she said).
Thanks for your time, is there a message you want to add for your fans and everyone who’s reading this?
