Bethenny Frankel, star of the Real Housewives of New York City, says everyone can be thin by following a few simple rules.
Frankel, a natural-foods chef, says portion control and limiting processed food consumption are key to becoming skinny.
The 5’5″ Bethenny reveals she struggled with weight problems her entire life and battled eating disorders as well as exercise addiction.
Now pregnant and engaged to be married, Frankel has finally gotten her food issues under control.
I WAS ADDICTED TO FOOD
“I used to be 20 pounds heavier,” Frankel, 39, tells Parade. “I would have been 50 pounds heavier, but I was white-knuckling it my whole life. I was completely obsessed with food.”
Bethenny reveals she wrote her best-selling diet book Naturally Thin last year because of her own addiction to eating and obsessive workouts.
“Since I was 8, I was obsessed with every single diet ever because I came from a very toxic, dysfunctional household with a complete emphasis and obsession with food and being fat,” she says. “It was absurd and moronic to be an adult and to be worried about dieting.”
IT’S NOT ABOUT BEING A SIZE 2
Frankel, who just released her second book, The Skinnygirl Dish, says being thin doesn’t mean being a prisoner to fat-free food and calorie counting.
“You [don’t] have to be a size 2 or 4,” explains Bethenny. “[Being a Skinnygirl] means knowing how to eat, drink, and be merry without obsessing over food.”
She adds: “A Skinnygirl eats what she wants and stops when she’s had enough. This might mean looking healthy, beautiful, and curvy in a size 10 or 12 or 14 or whatever size you wear, and feeling good in it.”
If you do overeat on a particular day or over the holidays, Frankel says it’s important not to overreact and feel defeated.
“People beat themselves up, binge-eat, and vow to be ‘good’ tomorrow,” says Bethenny. “I don’t calorie count — but I’m aware of what I eat.”
FRESH IS BEST
“My kitchen always has olive oil, lemons, parsley, garlic, salt, and pepper,” says Frankel. “These are great for dressing up meats, grains and vegetables.”
In addition to the usual staples of fresh vegetables and fruits, Bethenny stocks her cupboard with the following must-have items:
I like the Greek kind; plain is more versatile because you can use it in savory cooking or add fruits, nuts and sweetener to it for a snack.
I like real eggs or cartons of real egg whites, not egg substitutes.
Turkey or veggie; it’s great for flavoring a lot of things.
I keep low-fat versions of cottage cheese, cream cheese and sour cream on hand. Use nondairy if you prefer, or skip the cheese entirely.
I keep salad greens, like arugula, baby spinach or some kind of mesclun mix, but choose whatever you like. And some type of greens for cooking, such as kale, chard, collards, beet greens, and so forth.
“One thing I have mastered is which foods to keep in my house and how to turn those staples into delicious, easy meals and snacks that I can trust to make me feel nourished and energized but not bloated and guilty,” Frankel says.
