Salute to the 60”s is a concert featuring the sounds of the 1960’s with popular bands including Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, The Buckinghams and The Grass Roots. The concert will be performed at two great regional theatres; Genesee Theatre (January 29, 2010) in Waukegan, Illinois and Star Plaza (January 30, 2010) in Merrillville, Indiana. Carl Giammarese of The Buckinghams took the time to speak with me about the Salute to the ’60s concert tour.
Giammarese is one of the original members of The Buckinghams, along with Nick Fortuna. Members of The Buckinghams include Tom Scheckel, Bob Abrams and Bruce Soboroff.
The Buckinghams were pop sensations of the 1960’s and 40 years later they are still making music. The garage band of the ’60’s played upbeat hit tunes including Kind of a Drag; Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ Mercy, Mercy, Mercy’ Hey Baby (They’re Playin’ Our Song); and Don’t You Care.’
I got a chance to see The Buckinghams in concert at Genesee Theatre in Waukegan last spring and they were as dynamic as as ever, backed by the brass horns and music. The Buckinghams play at concerts and festivals throughout the country, and can sometimes be found at area festivals and fairs. The concerts at Genesee Theatre and Star Plaza give fans the chance to enjoy the show in the comfort of the great old theaters in the Chicago area.
Christine Nyholm: Can you tell people what to expect at the Salute to the ’60’s Concert?
Carl Giammarese: First of all, I love playing at the great old theaters. Star Plaza is my favorite venue and Genesee Theatre is becoming a favorite. The concert will include music by Peter Noone, The Buckinghams and The Grass Roots, in that order. Each group will play for about 45 to 50 minutes. It will be a night filled with music. This is a great way for us to start the year.
Christine Nyholm: What else do you have coming up this year?
Carl Giammarese: We have a CD//DVD Star Plaza Video two disc package coming out in February. We recorded the 2009 concert at the Star Plaza. The live performance recorded by the Buckinghams at Star Plaza includes a special appearance by Jim Peterik of The Ides of March and Survivor and a tribute to the band Chicago. The DVD comes with a bonus CD.
In May and June we will be touring around the country with the Happy Together Tour. We are also lining up concerts at festivals and fairs for the year.
I am also writing an autobiography, which I plan to have released before the Happy Together Tour.
Christine Nyholm: What have been the highlights of your career so far?
Carl Giammarese: That is so hard to answer, because there have been so many. I would say the having the top hit ‘Kind of a Drag’ followed by five more hits was a highlight. Another highlight would be all the great people we got to meet, including Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Chuck Berry, BB King, Little Richard, Ronny James and The Turtles. We also go to play in so many great places, like the Ed Sullivan Show, American Bandstand, the Jerry Lewis Show and the Joey Bishop Show. There are really too many great highlights to name them all.
Thank you to Carl for taking the time to talk with me.
