Looking to examine your future, or the future of others, through the art of Tarot reading? You’re not alone. Many people are searching for answers in places they’ve never ventured before –from Tarot readers, or at one of the increasingly popular “Tarot/Psychic Reading Parties” thrown by friends or co-workers. Michele Nimtz, of Land O’Lakes, Florida attended a tarot/henna reading party thrown by a co-worker. “I went because I thought it would be a hoot and I really did want to know what the psychic had to say about my future,” says Michele Nimtz. “I now have my own tarot deck,” added Nimtz, “and read for myself.”
If you want to learn to read tarot, for yourself, for amusement, or even professionally, how do you know which deck is right for you, should you choose to venture into the wide world of the metaphysical? There are three key ingredients to selecting a deck:
1. Price. Tarot decks can range from around $10 for a Rider Waite deck, up to $100 for the Dali Tarot. Most reputable shop owners will suggest that you start with an inexpensive deck to find out if you’ve got “the gift” or the patience to learn to read the deck, before delving deeper into your pockets.
2. Difficulty. Some decks are extremely complicated to read, with intricate pictures and meanings. If you are looking for a straight-shot, card-a-day reading for yourself, the simpler decks will be your best choice. Most decks come with a book, or a book can be purchased separately, that will explain the meaning of each card – some on multiple levels.
3. Appeal. What it really comes down to is… does the deck feel right for you? Do you feel a connection to it when you hold it in your hands? Does the artwork speak to you? Hold it. Look at the pictures. Try to get a “feeling” from the deck to determine if it’s a deck you can make a connection with. If not, shop around until you find a deck that does.
Keep in mind that while Tarot decks are fun for some, and serious enterprise for others, it is up to you to take the information you read and interpret in a way that you are comfortable with.
There are numerous shops in the Tampa area that carry tarot decks, including the major chain bookstores. It is also worth the drive to Cassadaga, Florida – east of Orlando – where they have a number of shops that carry a lot of different decks from which to make your selection.
