Next in the City of Coconut Creek sustainability lecture series will be, “Alternative Transportation – Bike Lanes, Greenways & More”. This lecture will be presented by Todd Henry-DeJesus and Jim Hetzel from the City of Coconut Creek and Mark Horowitz, Bicycle/Pedestrian Coordinator of Broward County.
The sustainability lecture on February 16, “Composting Basics for Homeowners” presented by Dr. George Fitzpatrick was well attended and very informative. I noticed many note takers and many asking additional questions after the lecture. He explained in detail the ins and outs of composting including some references.
One he particularly recommended was, “On Farm Composting Handbook” available through www.nraes.org . He also recommended two periodicals, BioCycle and Compost Science + Utilization. An additional source of information is a book available as a pdf file, Compost Use in Florida Composting published in 1998 but still relevant today. The link to this article is the State of Florida Department of Environmental Protection page which provides additional resources. I have included a slide show of the lecture at the end of this article.
At the end of the lecture there was an additional presentation asking for community input regarding the Northern Broward County Transit-Supportive Infrastructure and Land Use Study being conducted by the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization in coordination with the Southwest Palm Beach County and the Northern Broward County Mobility Studies Coordinating Committee. They are looking for residents, property and business owners in Parkland, Coconut Creek and Coral Springs. The first presentation on improving the livability of our cities will take place on March 2, 2010 from 5-8pm at the Northwest Regional Library, 3151 University Drive in Coral Springs. For more information go to SEFTC.
