A dynasty has crumbled! The Clements Colts were able to upset the defending-state champion and top-ranked Cold Springs Lady Eagles and eliminate them from an opportunity to play for their third-straight Class 2A Championship. The Colts used aggressive defense, opportune scoring and a injury to star-player Georgia Myrex to come away from the Northwest Regional title game with a 40-33 victory. Game MVP Daneshia Malone got a double-double in the game with 14 each in points and rebounds, while dishing out two assist and blocking four shots.
Clements jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and the way the whistles blew, it allowed the Lady Colts to man up and play extremely aggressive on defense throughout the game. Cold Springs (29-5) struggled early from the field and finished the game shooting less than 20% on the day. The Lady Eagles battled and clawed their way back into the game and took the lead on a shot by Georgia Myrex.
However, the Lady Eagles’ star player was hurt on the play that gave Cold Springs the lead. As she went up for a shot, it was thought in the minds of many Eagles fans that Myrex was fouled on the play; but the whistles were held in check and Myrex went down with an injury to her left ankle that left her hobbled for the remainder of the game.
Myrex was worked on for the rest of the half and through half-time, and was eventually able to come back onto the court to start the second half; although, she was clearly less than 100 percent healthy. Myrex finished the game with eight points, five steals, a blocked shot and four rebounds.
With Myrex out of the game the last 3:30 of the first half, Clements (25-7) was able to close it out on a 4-0 run and led 18-15 going into the locker rooms. Clements got two quick shots by Jessica Petty and Malone to up their lead, which proved pivotal. Abby Myrex answered with two 3-pointers that pulled the Lady Eagles to within a single point at 22-21, but that would be as close as Cold Springs would get. The Lady Colts held on and will be traveling to Birmingham for the AHSAA Final 48 held at the BJCC.
Also scoring for the Lady Colts were Chelsea Haggermaker with 14 points, six rebounds and an assist, Petty with six each in points and boards, five assists, four blocked shots and two steals, Summer Kirk with three steals and two points, Callie Estes added two points and one rebound, and Jordan Beggs finished with six rebounds, three steals and two points.
Cold Springs was led by Abby Myrex with 12 points, six steals and two rebounds, Ka Ka Crider added three points and a rebound, Palee Myrex contributed with seven boards, four points, two assists and a steal, Courtney Rice added six each in points and rebounds, two blocked shots and a steal, and Kaitlyn Allums pulled down two rebounds.
The Northwest All-regional team in Class 2A was Daneishia Malone (MVP) and Chelsea Haggermaker from Clements, Georgia Myrex and Abby Myrex from Cold Springs, Jordan Johnson from Hatton and Taylor Hester of Red Bay.
