In 2010, Big Bear hosts the ultimate, high adventure, high altitude, multisport challenge: Conquer the Bear.
Competitors will snowshoe, mountain bike, paddle, and run the trails in a series of four races, either as Conquer the Bear or Conquer the Bear Elite challengers. Big Bear’s altitude of between 6700′ and 8800′ makes each event the ultimate test of physical and mental endurance.
The first event in the series will be Snowshoe the Bear on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Conquer the Bear challengers will complete in either the 5K or 10K snowshoe race, as well as pre and post race special events. Snowshoe the Bear is a fun, family event, with live music, sled dogs, demos and cash prizes. Snowshoe rentals will be available for racers at local stores.
The second leg in the challenge happens on June 20, 2010 during the US Cup National XCT Mountain Bike event hosted by Team Big Bear. Conquer the Bear contestants must complete the Category 3 short course or a higher level race. Elite racers must complete the Expert or Pro category course.
The third challenge is during the Big Bear Paddle Fest, July 11, 2010. The Paddle Fest is a weekend kayak and canoe event, culminating in races on Sunday morning. Conquer the Bear contestants must complete the 5k or 10k event in either a kayak, canoe, or stand up paddleboard. The Elite challengers must complete the 30k event, paddling the full distance around Big Bear Lake.
In the last leg of the competition, contestants will participate in the Endure the Bear trail run on September 11, 2010. Expected to be the most difficult leg, Conquer the Bear challengers must at minimum complete the 5k Fun Run, while Elite athletes finish the 30k course.
The contest champion will be the finisher completing each of the four races in the least overall time. A grand prize will be given to both a male and female champion.
Each contestant receives VIP treatment at each event, discounts on lodging, and restaurants, start-line call-ups and a very special Conquer the Bear package of outdoor clothing and equipment.
