CREDO Mobile, the progressive phone company, is celebrating its one-year anniversary of a new era after donating over $65 million to groups like Doctors Without Borders, Physicians for a National Health Program and Earthjustice.
CREDO is the only phone company calling for a special prosecutor to investigate crimes of torture committed during the Bush administration.
Each time a customer uses one of CREDO’s services – CREDO Mobile, CREDO Long Distance or the Working Assets Credit Card, it automatically sends a donation to nonprofit groups human rights including peace, justice and the environment.
One CREDO phone member said about CREDO, “They really invest in long-term relationships with customers, which I appreciate. I also like knowing part of my bill goes directly to the things I love supporting. Besides my talking habit, I mean…”
Every year, CREDO asks members, its customers, to nominate nonprofit groups to receive funding. It evaluates the nominees and then, its employees and board of directors select the groups for its annual donations ballot. Customers vote to decide how much money each group gets.
“It’s been a year since President Obama was inaugurated. While we’re pleased with some of the progressive change we’ve seen, it’s now clear we have a long way to go — and that powerful interests will try to block us at every turn,” says CREDO.
CREDO thinks mobile phone companies are part of the problem, not part of the solution.
AT&T, one of the largest corporate political contributors in America, has helped elect opponents of progress such as Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and James Inhofe (R-Okla.).
Since 2002, Verizon Wireless has steadily contributed to the Blue Dog Democrats, whose opposition has diluted the impact of many progressive reform proposals.
