Just think about what this country will be like now that corporations are free to buy any election they want? It has been called the end of democracy as we know it.
The US Supreme Court has ruled that corporations will now be allowed to spend as much money as they want on political campaigns. While your life might not change today, it will in the future. Just think about what this country will be like when corporations are free to buy any election they want?
It has been called, the end of democracy as we know it.
Harvard Law professor & TARP Congressional Oversight Panel Chairperson, Elizabeth Warren, has been a steadfast advocate of new regulations to prevent the banks from exploiting consumers as they did during the events that lead to the collapse of our financial markets in 2008. She said, “They demanded a bailout and got it.” Warren added, “Are the banks in control here or are we going to do something for the people?”
No, Elizabeth, the banks are in control.
For as badly as our government functions, we were still free to choose our political candidates. Now all that is over. With no cap on campaign spending, corporations can install just about any candidate they want. And that candidate will be their legislative puppet. Now multiply that by the entire congress. Whatever legislation the corporation wants, they get. The corporate-elected puppets could repeal environmental laws, change tax laws, and perhaps even repeal the First Amendment, which was what won them their right to spend an unlimited amount of money funding political campaigns.
“We simply cannot return to business as usual.” President Obama said. “We’re going to break apart too-big-to-fail.”
With a congress wholly owned by corporate America, do you think any legislation designed to regulate corporations will have any hope of passing?
Constitutional law expert Jonathan Turley, said, “This is going to open up the floodgates and have a deleterious effect on this country.” Adding that we have a “right to be alarmed.”
It is apparent that the health care reform debate has had its corporate-funded fingerprints all over it. With this new law, it will only get worse.
Representative, Alan Grayson (D-FL) said, “They will reward the politicians that play ball with them and beat to death the politicians that don’t…The Senator from Arkansas will become the senator from Microsoft…If we don’t stop this corporate coo you can kiss this country goodbye…They’ll buy and sell elected officials by the gross.”
We saw what happened to this country when the giants of Wall Street took over the Treasury and health care reform. Both crashed and burned. Now they’ll be able to take over the entire legislative branch and eventually, The White House.
The Supreme Court decision was based on the reasoning that a corporation has the same First Amendment rights as an individual, and should therefore be allowed to freely and openly support the candidate of their choice, using as much of their corporations’ money as they want.
Senator Chuck Schumer said, “this will overflow our elections and undermine our democracy.”
What do you suppose will be left of our First Amendment rights, by the time our new corporate-bought and owned government is done with it?
103 years of restrictions on corporate campaign contributions have been swept away overnight. We might be wise to change the lyrics of “God Bless America” to God help America.
