The BlackBerry Bold 9700 and Motorola Droid are locked in a heated battle of the ages! Today we take a look at the all important battery life of both phones and determine who can stand the test of time!
Before I get into the main event, let me preface by saying that I didn’t perform any rigorous battery testing like the one’s done by the geniuses at CrackBerry. I simply used both phones on a daily basis as equally as possible. Both devices are smartphones and can obviously do all sorts of things at the same time and therefore gobble up battery life like candy. Today I will let you know, through typical average usage, which phone has a better battery life.
Casting aside all journalistic integrity and objectivity, I have to proclaim to the nation that the battery life on the Motorola Droid is abysmal. I spend my day at work doing my actual day job and playing around with my two phones when I have a chance to. The signal in my building is fairly good for Verizon in most parts of the building, so my phone isn’t exactly struggling to find the best signal. In spite of this, the Droid always struggles to make it through to the end of the day.
On one particular day, the phone was flashing all sorts of messages begging me to charge it by two in the afternoon. Thankfully I had a charger with me at work, otherwise I’m certain it would not have lasted the next three hours of work. As I said, I try my hardest to use the phones the same amount of time each day so I can have a more accurate reading of how they compare. However, even when using my Bold more often than the Droid, the former still has more life at the end of the day.
The battery life on the Droid is most likely so horrible because of the fact that you don’t really have an offical way to close an app once it’s running. There’s an app you can get for free from the Android Marketplace that allows you to select different applications that are running and close them down completely so as to save battery life, but why isn’t that something that’s already built into the phone?

Research In Motion really outdid itself with the Bold 9700 and its battery life. Bloggers and reviewers all over the Interwebs sing praises and hail this battery as one of the best they’ve ever seen. It’s no secret why they think that. There have been days where I will be on the phone nonstop for hours on end. I’ll listen to Pandora while cruising the Internet and messaging several people at once for several hours a day. By the time I get home, my phone is always right around 50% charged.
To be honest, when I first got the phone I wasn’t too impressed with this. I had heard the raging reviews on how great the 9700 battery was and expected much more. After having the Droid for over a week and doing all the things on it that I did and do on my Bold, I now realize how far superior the Bold battery is to that of the Droid. In fact, just yesterday I sent an update on Twitter that my Droid was at 15% battery power while my Bold was still going strong at 90% before noon.
