In Haitian Voodoo, there is a lwa (a deity subordinate to God) named Papa Legba. According to Encyclopedia Mythica, Legba holds the keys to the gate separating the humans from the gods. He is the one standing at the crossroads between this world and Heaven. He is the Voice of God: the one who facilitates communication between the divine and the earthly sphere. Legba is linked to the Apostle Peter, who stands at the gates of Heaven and who is said to have the “Keys of the Kingdom”
Here is a prophetic word: in the midst of the tragedy in Haiti, the stands the Voice of God. The one with the keys of heaven is speaking to the people of Haiti and to the whole world. We are at a crossroads. What was is no more. It has been shaken up. It has been torn down. It was destroyed that something new might be built upon its place.
During the shaking it seems that our world is falling apart and that God is far from us. Death and destruction are all around us. We feel abandoned. We feel stricken of God. Disease and pestilence float silently across our land as the mist from the sea precipitating Sickness and Plague, Despair and Misery. Hopelessness are its lees. Affliction and pain are its dregs.
But this is not from God. This is not how God works with humans in this age. There is a way to recognize when it is God who is doing the shaking and the overturning. It is not in earth quakes; it is not in hurricanes; it is not in violent fire. It is in a still small voice. Remember the story of Elijah in the cave 1 Kings 19:9-12.
In this dispensation God is working with the spirit of mankind. He longs that we reflect His image. God shakes and overthrows so that only that which is true and heavenly in us remains. He is shaking up:
- Psalm 30: 6,7 Self-sufficiency was shaken out so that faith and reliance upon God remained
- Psalm 30: 9-11 Pride was shaken out so that humility before God and man remained
- Psalm 30: 12 Self glorification shaken out that sincere praise and gratitude remains.
The real, unshakable you which remains is a man or woman who manifests the fruit of the Spirit. Not clones, but unique, individual expressions/reflections of the divine.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: Galatians 5:22,23
And knowing this, let us acknowledge and accept the shaking when it comes – and it is coming. Not just for Haiti but for the U.S., Europe, and the rest of the planet. But don’t despair. When the shaking comes we should remember what David said in Psalm 30: 5:
For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning
