The Eldorado Golden Eagles’ JV girls beat the Rio Grande Raven girls decisively by a score of 59-15 Friday. Sarah Mickelson helped Eldorado get off to an early lead. She grabbed a defensive rebound and passed the ball to a teammate. Then she sprinted to the other end of the floor to score two points. Raven Gel Trujillo intercepted a pass but Rio Grande couldn’t score. Then Mickelson scored again for Eldorado.
Trujillo stole another pass but the Golden Eagles got the ball back and Gemma Biasetto scored on a layup. Trujillo fouled Emily Cicchetti but the Golden Eagle missed both free throws. Rio Grande’s Vanessa Hernandez broke up an Eldorado pass attempt by knocking the ball out of play. But the Golden Eagles scored later on a layup by Shannon Lowther. At the end of the first quarter Eldorado led 17-3.
Dezi Sauceda stymied Eldorado’s first offensive possession in the second quarter by stealing the ball. But when the Golden Eagles got the ball back Katherine Lies scored for them. Raven Vanessa Hernandez grabbed a rebound for Rio Grande and Biasetto got one for her team. Chelsea Nelson and Kerstin Strong scored for Eldorado.
Vanessa Hernandez stole the ball once again for Rio Grande which led to a scoring basket by Shantae Salazar. Vanessa Hernandez and Biasetto grabbed rebounds for their teams in the battle on the boards. Then Vanessa Hernandez fouled Tanya Aragon and the Golden Eagle sank both free throws. Aragon stole the ball from the Ravens on the next play which resulted in a scoring basket for her team.
The score at the half was 32-6 in favor of Eldorado. In an action-packed sequence of events starting off the third quarter, Biasetto grabbed a defensive rebound and started to dribble only to have Sauceda take the ball from her. Sauceda passed to Salazar who scored. Salazar snatched a rebound for the Ravens. Biasetto intercepted a Rio Grande pass but Eldorado turned the ball over.
Biasetto got her hands on another Raven pass but when she tried to throw the ball to a teammate Sauceda knocked the ball out of play. Eldorado got the ball back and Biasetto scored with an assist from Mickelson. Eldorado continued to dominate the game with successive baskets by Lies, Biasetto and Strong. Strong snatched a rebound and Eldorado’s Aragon sank a free throw after being fouled by Gina Lopez.
Christine Martinez scored for the Golden Eagles and the quarter ended with her team leading 49-8. Trujillo started off the fourth quarter by dribbling to avoid her defender and leaping into the air to shoot a long shot into the basket for Rio Grande. Golden Eagle Cicchetti was called for a blocking foul on Salazar who hit one of two from the free throw line. Nelson fouled Raven Dallene Lujan who hit one of two at the charity stripe. Her teammate Vanessa Hernandez banked in a long shot. Gina Lopez scored for the Ravens after Salazar intercepted an Eldorado pass. Then Gina Lopez fouled Aragon who hit both free throws. Lowther and Jordan Pellock scored for the Golden Eagles and the game ended.
