Thursday, Jan. 21 — PAWS is the largest animal rescue organization and the only no-kill shelter in Philadelphia. More than 30,000 animals enter Philadelphia’s animal control shelter each year. PAWS, a nonprofit organization is dedicated to saving the most vulnerable among them through foster care and adoption programs. It is “working to make Philadelphia a city in which every healthy and treatable pet is guaranteed a home.” That mission can only be accomplished with public support.
Tonight’s fashion show, Top Dogs on the Cat Walk at TRUST (the building where the Real World television series took place) is one fun way to support PAWS and save the lives of thousands of animals. PAWS promises to ply guests with cocktails from 32 Degrees and hors d’oeuvres from Table 31, Joshua’s Catering, and other lounge/eateries.
From 8:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. the cat walk will sparkle with the fashionable panache of local celebrities and FOX 29 talent while Mike Jerrick from FOX 29 News and Good Morning Philadelphia emcees. Following the fashion show, Jerrick will introduce the DJ who will spin music for everyone’s dancing enjoyment. Proceeds from the event especially benefits PAWS’s new spay/neuter facility.
“It is time to come together,” says Dana Spain, founder and president of PAWS, “have some fun, look at great fashions, and raise money to save the homeless and abandoned animals of Philadelphia.”
Tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at the door of the event. TRUST (formerly Fuel) at 249 Arch Street in Old City Philadelphia is a renovated turn-of-the-century space boasting 10,000 square-feet of neoclassical splender beginning with the exquisite crystal chandelier in the entrance and the grand marble balcony that encompasses it overhead. Inlaid white marble and oak floors are the signature of this delightful venue. The fun evening for PAWS begins here at 7 p.m. and keeps rolling until 10 p.m.
PAWS, on the other hand, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m. Mondays – Saturdays and closes an hour earlier on Sunday. The shelter is located at 100 North 2nd Street near at the corner of Arch Street. Animals stay there about 2 – 8 weeks depending on their individual needs.
Humans are invited to foster homeless animals too young or too sick to be adopted. Temporary foster care is particularly in demand April through September during “kitten season.” Literally hundreds of cats are brought into the shelter on any given day during that period.
Adoption is the best way to save these animals. Cats and dogs are available for adoption from PAWS’s Old City shelter. PAWS cats can also be adopted from the PETsMART locations at 24th and Oregon in South Philly and 7422 Bustleton Avenue near Cottman Avenue, and from PETCO at Grant Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard.
If adoption is not possible volunteering a small portion of time to bathe the animals, give medicine and comfort, or even provide administrative assistance is quite helpful.
