Shoppers who have been searching grocery stores for Kellogg’s Eggo Waffles have found empty freezer shelves at most stores with a sign about the shortage. The Eggo shortage has been going on since September 2009 when their largest bakery in Atlanta experienced supply constraints on Eggo products caused by flood damage.
The FDA issued a written warning that the Georgia facility has a number of sanitation violations and has been cited for listeria bacteria contamination.
A warning letter was sent to Kellogg’s President and CEO, A.D. David Mackay on January 27, 2010. It was released to the public on February 16.
The letter states a number of offenses at the Atlanta, Georgia bakery that manufactures Eggo frozen waffles. The letter stated, in part:
On October 22-29, 2009, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) conducted an inspection of your frozen food manufacturing facility located at 5601 Bucknell Drive, SW, Atlanta, GA 30336. The inspection was initiated in response to a notification from the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) on August 31, 2009, of a positive test for Listeria monocytogenes in your Eggo Buttemilk Waffles identified with a Better If Used Before date beginning with NOV17 10 EAAM1. During the inspection, we collected a variety of samples consisting of finished products, in-process products, and environmental swabs. FDA laboratory analyses of the environmental swabs collected during this inspection also found the presence of the pathogen Listeria monocytogenes in your facility. In addition, we found that you have significant deviations from the current Good Manufacturing Practice.
Some of the other issues from the rather long list of problems addressed in the FDA’s letter included the fact that ducts and pipes were found to be dripping into the area where the food was being prepared and workers not following procedures for hand washing and cleanliness.
Kellogg’s claims that all of the violations were remedied before the plant was re-opened in October 2009, prior to receiving the letter from the FDA. They have not yet responded to the letter.
Eggo is a brand of frozen waffles sold in the United States, Canada and Mexico, which is owned by the Kellogg Company. Fortune magazine stated in 2005 that Eggo had a 65% share of the frozen waffle market in the United States.
