That big-named bookstore in your city is not hard to miss, but what about smaller mom and pop shops?
If you long to discover your hometown literary hidden gems, the Local Books iPhone application will help you pinpoint book-related points of interest in your neighborhood.
Powered by LibraryThing Local, the LibraryThing member-created database of 51,000 bookstores and libraries around the world, Local Books is the literary lover’s way to find book signings, lectures and other bookish events in local bookstores and libraries.
Users of the site could already find out what was going on in their city by using the LibraryThing Local portion of the website, but this application allows you go to mobile while still being able to find neighborhood book events.
Book seekers can easily search for bookstores, fairs, festivals, libraries and other literary locations and events, and the results are offered up on a map with colored pins pointing you to where the literary action is.
What if I don’t have an iPhone?
Users without an iPhone can use LibraryThings’s mobile page to view their personal catalog of books which have been entered on the website, but hopefully there will an upgraded mobile site some day so all book enthusiasts can find what they’re looking for, regardless of their tech gadget of choice.
Tracking your wish list
An integrated wish list would be another great addition to the Mobile portion of LibraryThing, so you can browse your book list once you get to the store of your choice and make an informed decision of what book you would like to buy next.
Of course, you can simply view your personal catalog, but since you can’t view your Collections using Mobile, you could simply tag books you want to buy with a “to buy” listing so it will show up when you view the book detail page in LibraryThing Mobile.
Then on your next trip to the bookstore, simply load LibraryThing Mobile and view all books tagged with “to buy”. Just remember to keep your online catalog updated every time you buy a book so you won’t end up with multiple copies.
Making book cataloging fun
All in all, LibraryThing is a wonderful tool for book lovers, and whether you’ve got an iPhone to use the LibraryThing Local application or want to go the old school route using LibraryThing Mobile, it makes keeping tally of your books a fun task.
