Genesis 1:30 refers to herbs and ‘every green plant’ as food. Science continues to reveal what powerful medicine herbs are and garlic is no exception. Twenty-first century Americans are more likely to treat the herbs that grow around them like weeds, spraying them and mowing them instead of eating them.
Garlic is in the same family as Onion, and both are nutritious and powerful antibiotics and antivirals. Garlic is famous for its antibiotic properties, but contains over 100 other elements that benefit us. It protects against heart disease and cancer and is an immune booster and has a multitude of other benefits. Nutritionally, it’s a powerhouse, containing calcium, folate, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, vitamin B-1, vitamin B-2, vitamin B-3, vitamin C, and zinc.
Garlic can stop strep throat and other infections with amazing speed. Garlic is well tolerated, since it is designed to be our food, and broadly effective compared to specific pharmaceuticals. Crushing a clove of garlic releases Allicin, a strong antibiotic. However, it rapidly oxidizes, so is best used fresh and externally.
A common application of garlic to a throat infection is by way of a garlic press or poultice. On a white paper towel, smash a clove or two of fresh garlic with the bottom of a mug, enough to wet the towel with garlic juice. Pour a spoonful of hot water onto the garlic and fold the towel over. Immediately place on the throat for one or two minutes, making sure the temperature is cool enough. Since garlic is strong, it can burn sensitive skin, a bit of oil can be rubbed on the throat first. Be especially careful on a child or baby’s sensitive skin. This is wonderful on the chest of a sick baby – getting antibiotic right on the respiratory system safely. Apply a bit of oil first and watch for any signs of redness or irritation. The bottom of the feet are a good option for a baby – garlic will travel throughout the body, regardless of where it is applied. Repeat a couple times a day with freshly crushed garlic until you see the symptoms of infection are gone.
Getting back to the Bible which indicates herbs should be our food – it seems natural we should try to eat more of it, for general good health, and prevent those infections from even taking hold. Fortunately, there is hummus! Not to mention so many other ways to get garlic into our meals. As we get to know the nutritional and medicinal value of herbs, and incorporate them into our diets naturally (hopefully replacing some of the processed foods), it can only improve our general health.
