The NBA appears to have taken a serious stance on the incident involving Gilbert Arenas taking guns into the Wizzards’ locker room. Arenas has been suspended indefinitely without pay. Considering he had a $111 million dollar contract, that is a significant decision.
Perhaps the resulting suspension was influenced by what appeared to be a public outcry against the basketball star. No apparent action was taken following the incident whereby Arenas allegedly “drew down” on fellow team mate, Javaris Crittendon.
Even the Metro Police Department drew heat for the way that some believe they have “dragged their heels”. Appearing on WTOP Radio yesterday, Chief Cathy Lanier urged people to be patient. Chief Lanier told the listening audience that the Police can act immediately if they witness an offense, but must investigate fully when it gets reported to them.
Even when the subject admits to the offense? Arenas reportedly admitted to bringing the guns into the Verizon Center. There is no way that he had a concealed weapons permit for the guns and unless he walked in to the building openly holding four guns for the whole place to see, he had to break the law by carrying concealed weapons.
Which leads people to wonder if the Police are giving him preferential treatment because he is a celebrity? Speaking of preferential treatment, why is there no mention of Javaris Crittendon being interviewed by the Police or facing suspension? It appears as if his gun was nice and handy as he was able to respond in kind when Arenas allegedly pulled a gun on him over a gambling debt.
Could it be that Crittendon is flying under the radar due to his keeping silent about the incident? Some say that Arenas is his own worse enemy. He certainly didn’t appear to be too effected by the whole mess on Tuesday night before the game with the 76ers when he foolishly simulated “shooting” his team mates with “finger guns”.
One thing is for certain; the NBA is sending a message out there that this kind of irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated. It is about time too. Maybe now these wealthy stars will wake up and realize just how much is at stake. If they feel they are in danger, they need to invest in professional security personnel who are properly trained, licensed and insured to protect them.
It’s one thing to hang out with your friends from the neighbor hood – it’s another to appoint your posse as your guardian angels. Leave the protection to the professionals and keep cashing your pay checks.
