January 20 — LPGA Tour star Christina Kim can’t hide her excitement about the upcoming release of her new book, “Swinging from My Heels: Confessions of an LPGA Star.”

“I finally got my eyes on an advanced reader’s copy. I poured over every word, every punctuation mark,” Kim says in an interview with Boston Golf Examiner. “When I finally got my hands on the [book], I screamed because it’s real. It’s my baby!”
The 240-page hardcover edition, which Kim wrote with Sports Illustrated’s Alan Shipnuck, follows the popular golfer on and off the course during the entire 2009 season.
Inside look. “You’ll get some intimate details of what life is like inside the ropes, the feelings and emotions, as well as what I’m doing when the sun goes down and I’m not playing golf,” Kim says.
While declining to provide juicy details (you’ll have to buy the book), the two-time LPGA Tour winner promises readers an extremely close look at “raw, intimate moments” of her life.
“I opened myself from the jugular down to the belly button,” Kim notes. “I poured my heart into this book.”
Reaching out to fans. None of this should come as a surprise to Kim’s numerous fans. The popular golfer spends almost as much time chatting online with her followers as she does on the golf course. Just ask the 14-year-old Ecuadorian kid who’s become a “true fan” even though the LPGA has never played there.
“A lot of pro athletes live such private lives,” adds the golfer, who is unlike almost any other pro athlete or celeb on the planet. Quite the opposite, as Kim unabashedly shares her thoughts, feelings, candid photos, and videos online.
“I thrive off of touching people’s lives and interacting with them,” Kim says.
Entering her eighth year on tour, Kim promises her book will provide an even more unguarded look at her on- and off-course self.
“I’m on Twitter, I have a blog,” Kim says, “but people have always seen just one or two layers peeled back of the onion that is me.”
Dedication. Not one to keep her emotions close to the vest, Kim is effusive about signing three pre-release copies during a recent New York meeting with her publisher, Bloomsbury USA.
“This was the first time ever I wrote a dedication for my own book,” Kim notes. “It was thrilling.”
The dedication, of course, is pure Christina. “‘I hope you have as much reading this as I did writing it,’” she penned for her fans. “It was awesome.”
Collaboration. While Kim has had a hankering to put her life into words, it was Shipnuck’s idea to collaborate with the two-time U.S. Solheim Cup standout on a completely different type of golf opus.
“No one’s ever done a book about the LPGA or pro golf from inside the ropes,” Kim says. “Everything is always about the instruction.”
Not this reader, from this golfer, with this collaborator.
“Alan is a phenomenal writer,” Kim says. “He puts my voice into the book, which is amazing.”
Kim, for her part, is happy to let her inner writer loose.
“Part of me always wanted to be part of writing,” she says, “but life always happened, so I’ve never really had the time.”
Pre-order. You may pre-order Kim’s book from Barnes & Noble on April 27. Watch for a book party in New York, followed by book-signings at LPGA tourneys after the release, Kim says.
As for which tourneys those will be, Kim promises she’ll play every one on the LPGA’s 2010 globe-trotting schedule.
Love of the game. “Anything and everything I can get in,” Kim says. “There are [times] where I’m on the road 45 weeks out of the year, but this is what we do. I love playing, I love spending time with people that mean things to me. I love playing golf.”
As for the LPGA, players and staff could not be more supportive of Kim’s literary endeavor.
“They’re really embracing it,” Kim says. “There are a few books about the LPGA here and there, but nothing of this magnitude. All the tour players want to get a copy, they’re so excited to read it.”
They’re not alone, that’s for sure.
