The more exciting red carpet looks occurred so far and few in between at the Grammy Awards held at the Staple Center in Los Angeles last night. More elegant looks were sought by many of the songbirds including Beyonce, Keri Hilson, Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood while cool and modern looks were done best by Lea Michele of Glee, Jennifer Hudson and Miley Cyrus.
If you were looking for ‘spectacular’ on the red carpet – those moments that will be etched in your memory for years to come – there were few. The edgiest stars were even fewer but what did surprise was the number of new designer names on the Grammy’s red carpet, a surprising number based here in New York.
Big winner of the evening, Taylor Swift, brought the glamour in a sparkling, figure clinging gown with a refreshing neckline and open back by Kaufman Franco. Several large bracelets lent the look a modern touch allowing the history making songstress a very relevant look.
Beyonce in Stephane Rolland
The other big lady of the night, Beyonce, captivated all in an embroidered gown that accentuated her well known curves. The gown is from French-based designer Stephane Rolland, also a newcomer to the fashion scene and red carpet. Beyonce’s long locks were streaked with metallic gold matching the gold beauty and accessories theme.
Carrie Underwood in George Chakra
Carrie Underwood displayed classic southern beauty in polished hair and face and a white venetian inspired gown by New York designer George Chakra. The country singer carried a sweet and elegant look.
Kerry Hilson in Dolce & Gabbana
Keri Hilson dazzled the red carpet in a Dolce & Gabbana blush gown featuring a jeweled waiste and accessorizing with Neil Lane jewels. Her hair was flawless in a twisted, pushed back up-do. Keri trumped all as the best dressed of the evening.
Katy Perry in Zac Posen
The newly engaged Katy Perry wore a nude body clinging gown with metallic gold print by Zac Posen and Bettie Paige hair do. The flesh colored selection plateaued on the red carpet. Perry raises expectations in respect to fashion and the flesh colored selection was not enough to dazzle her fashion admirers.
Lea Michele in Romona Keveza
Some cool moments at the Grammy red carpet show came in short forms. Getting high marks in a sassy short frock was Lea Michele in a Romona Keveza design, also based here in New York. The adorable glee star accomplished young and fresh successfully and disarmed all in her wake with her flirty and bright charm.
Jennifer Hudson in Victoria Beckham
Jennifer Hudson flaunted her slimming physique in a rocketing all black look by, again, singer and designer Victoria Beckham. Singer Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland also donned a Victoria Beckham design.
Miley Cyrus in Herve Leger by Max Azria
Miley Cyrus in a Herve Leger by Max Azria frock was a trendy choice for the all-grown-up teen sensation. Tidier hair would have brought forth the cutting-edge style of Cyrus’ dress selection and accessories while causing a fashion buzz about the young star.
And the unremarkable statements were a recurring phenomenon at the Staple Center.
Malin Akerman in a metallic mini and thigh high boots was a trendy statement for the music awards and perhaps too casual.
Ke$ha in Nicolas Jebran
Then there were the looks which seemed to beg for media attention. One strained look came from new-to-the-scene singer Ke$ha in a Nicolas Jebran design which could qualify as, what she has described, “garbage can chic” although the singer felt her Grammy look did not exhibit her usual sensibility. Let us agree to disagree.
Miley Cyrus in Herve Leger by Max Azria
Jennifer Lopez wore a part white part silver, half short and half gown design by Versace. The statement was a lackluster attempt to resemble the old glamorous J-Lo over whom we all swooned (think green-printed, scandalous Versace gown Lopez donned for the Grammy Awards in 2000).
