Izzie returned with hopes of reconciling with Alex on “Grey’s Anatomy” Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. She returned with news she was feeling better and was ready to return to the hospital, not Seattle Grace, but a hospital nearby that would allow she and Alex to work on their relationship.
Her timing could not have been worse since she returned right after Meredith discovered Alex and Lexie in bed together. Alex was nice to her, but you could tell he was uncomfortable around her, and he didn’t seem that interested in her being home. He was so cold to her, and I still can’t believe he said he would choose surgery over love during Cristina’s debate about which is more important.
During Izzie’s cat scan, she asked Alex if he had moved on. He told her he had slept with someone. “We’ll get through it,” she said. It seemed to clear the tension a little, and Alex stayed by her, holding her foot because he couldn’t reach her hand, during the entire scan.
At the end of the episode. Alex had a break down. He hugged her and nearly cried. He told her he now realized that he deserved someone who would stay and not run away. He said he was happy for her, her health and her new job, but he wanted her to go, and he didn’t want her to ever come back. I’m taking a wild guess that this is the last time “Grey’s Anatomy” fans will ever see Izzie Stevens.
Teddy did not leave, as she had promised to Cristina at the end of last week’s episode. She told Cristina that the Chief had asked her to finish out her contract. Cristina was completely embarrassed about, in reality, trading Owen, but Teddy didn’t want to hear anything about it. As much as Cristina didn’t mean what she said because she loves Owen, she told Meredith that she sort of did mean it because she loves having Teddy as a teacher and being in surgery again makes her feel alive. Later, after debating about whether she and the other residents would choose love or surgery, Cristina told Teddy that she would always choose surgery, always choose her gift, and she refused to apologize for that fact.
Derek tried to talk to the Chief about his drinking problem, even though he promised Meredith he wouldn’t. Of course, the chief denied everything. He pushed Derek away and acted like Derek was being the bad guy by trying to help. Instead of taking the help, the Chief decided to take on a huge surgery and allow Meredith to scrub in on a part of the surgery that should be reserved for fifth year residents. This is when Bailey realized that something was very wrong with the Chief. Derek turned to Owen for advice, and Owen, without knowing the truth of the situation, was to do the right thing no matter what the consequences. After that, Derek took a bottle of alcohol to the Chief, poured him a glass and told him he didn’t believe that would be his only drink that day.
Derek, angry that Meredith wouldn’t confront the Chief about his drinking problem or tell the board about it, tried to bargain with her. He reminded her that the board would have no problem making him the new chief of surgery, and he told her his first order of business as the chief of surgery would be hiring Izzie back. It was after Meredith saw how excited Izzie was about her clean scans and the thought of working at a hospital again that she told Derek he could talk to the board.
Teddy, completely drunk one night at the bar, told Owen that Cristina tried to trade him for her (Teddy) staying and continuing to teach her (Cristina). Owen was shocked. He runs to Cristina to tell her that people matter and he matters. Basically, surgery isn’t everything. The two end the episode in a seriously intense make out session.
Mark and Lexie admitted to one another they had slept with other people. Mark told the truth first, and then Lexie told the truth. The difference between the two admissions was that Lexie was relieved, and Mark was devastated and disgusted that Lexie would sleep with another man while he was trying to help his sick daughter.
