Leno vs. Conan continues and one of them still isn’t funny
NBC just doesn’t seem to get it. After years of getting his butt kicked by Letterman, they kicked Leno off the Tonight Show… wait, my bad. He stepped down. Sorry. They then turned the reigns of that show over to the much funnier Conan O’Brien and for whatever reason gave the not funny at all Leno a prime time show and pit him against all the other networks’ 9:00 dramas, which then also proceeded to kick his butt in ratings. Then when that didn’t work out to well, or at least O’Brien’s jokes didn’t mesh well with the audience tuning in at 10:30, they started to regret that decision.
So what is NBC going to do about it? Cancel him like they should and hopefully rid us of his pompous and arrogant snarky jokes? Nope. Well they threatened to cancel him, or at least word got out that it was a possibility. But no. What they are now thinking of doing is putting him back on in the Tonight Show slot and again bumping Conan back to 11:30. Nothing is official yet, and if it does happen, it won’t be until after the 2010 Winter Olympics. Why?
You have to wonder if Jay Leno has pictures of NBC executives engaging in Satanic rituals or having improper relations with goats at this point because why in the name of all that is Holy would they want to keep him around that bad? In responding to all the wild rumors about what was going to happen to Jay’s new show, one NBC exec went on record as saying, “Jay Leno is one of the most compelling entertainers in the world today. As we have said all along, Jay’s show has performed exactly as we anticipated on the network. It has, however, presented some issues for our affiliates. Both Jay and the show are committed to working closely with them to find ways to improve performance.” Yikes. Really? So NBC knew his show would be a failure?….because it is. Yet they want to keep him around because he’s….wait what was the word?…oh right. Compelling. Leno’s ratings are so bad that local affiliates are complaining that he’s running off viewers that would normally stick around for the nightly news. I’m not sure that’s true, but whatever it takes to get him off TV, I’m all for.
And what about Conan? Is he just going to oblige and go happily back to his old time slot? Surely there would be a breach of contract in there and if there is hopefully he shoves it straight up NBC’s…. Well, maybe I’m getting ahead of myself on that one. What do you think? Should NBC let Jay stick around? Would you really miss him? It might be time to get rid of everyone working at NBC. They’ve clearly lost sight of what it takes to be one of the premiere television networks. They’ve done nothing but make bad decisions, canceling My Name is Earl and Southland and keeping Heroes among them.
Sound off below on what you would do with Jay Leno or to revamp the night time talk shows.
