In 1984, Semifreddi’s open the doors to a 450 square-foot in Kensington, California, with one sourdough recipe, four products and a commitment to bake and deliver world-class handmade bread daily. Now baking more than 50 different bread and pastries, in a typical week, they bake around 190,000 loaves of bread and 30,000 pastries at the “world” headquarters, their “world” being the Bay Area.
At Semifreddi’s, they know that quality baking is all about quality ingredients and they don’t cut any corners. They use only whole grain, non-genetically modified flour for all of their baked goods.
Try the Country Levain, an earthy, rustic whole wheat round. And for sandwiches try the Deli Wheat, a perfect whole wheat sandwich loaf, and pile it high with all of your favorite sandwich fixings. And the Deli Grainary, with its whole wheat flour, organic rye flour, flax seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds and poppy seeds, is a step above all other multi-grain breads.
Here are just a few of the over 350 quality grocery stores and outlets in the Bay Area that stock whole grain goodness baked daily at Semifreddi’s. Click on any store name for Bay Area locations.

To serve my Roasted Butternut Squash Soup, with a serrated knife, slice off the top 2 – 3 inches of one of Semifreddi’s Country Levain rounds. Using your fingers, hollow out the inside of the round leaving one half to one inch of bread around the inside. Be careful not to tear any holes in the crust of the bread. Make the bread pieces removed from the inside of the bread round all about 1 inch in size. (These can be irregularly shaped so just tear them into smaller pieces.) In a bowl, toss the pieces with a little olive oil, a little garlic powder and a little salt and pepper. Bake in a 375 degree preheated oven for about 10 minutes until crispy and golden brown. Ladle the soup into the hollowed-out bread round and sprinkle the homemade “croutons” on top.
