Alias actress Jennifer Garner puts up a mean screen in movies like Elecktra and The Kingdom, but for the first part of her life, Garner says she couldn’t fight, she couldn’t communicate and couldn’t love.
In this week’s published Parade issue, the 37-year-old mother of two and now-wife to Ben Affleck says things weren’t always so peachy-keen.
In her previous marriage to actor Scott Foley, Garner learned through divorce therapy that she was handicapped in relationships and in love because she was unable to communicate.
“I don’t like to argue,” Garner told Parade. “But back then, I couldn’t have a fight. I couldn’t work things out because I wasn’t able to say what I needed to say. It was a huge heartbreak for me. So I went to work on it. I started therapy.”
While Garner admits she had a “lot of growing up” to accomplish, she credits the hard work spent on her inner self to the happiness she enjoys now. As a mom to their two children, first-born Violet and Serpahina, Garner says her relationship with Affleck takes work-well-worth-it to keep the sparks going.
“You steal the time. You steal a date, you steal a kiss, you steal a whisper. After the kids are asleep you… well, you know. Whatever it is. You slip away for a night,” she joked with the paper mag, adding she struggles, like all moms, juggling work and motherhood.
Garner, who dignifies her work as “unheroic”, says it’s still a spin-around for her to find balance. Yet, still Garner’s willing to put the work in to what matters in life. Her inner self and relationship with Mr. Ben Affleck aren’t the only things that take effort. Garner’s at the top of the list when it comes to fittest celebs and she’s totally confessed to the “unmagical” and undesirable journey of weight loss.
“I had to get on the treadmill and do weights and Pilates – and stop eating yummy things,” she said in a past interview. “It was a pain. It was not a magic formula.” She also added she resented her pals who said the fat would just “melt” away leaving her with her prior post-baby body. And since Garner is a huge fan of chocolate and cheese, she teamed up with celebrity personal trainer Valerie Waters, inventor of the ValSlide, and a big advocate of portion controls.
