While the economic situation in our country and the state continues to stay sluggish, there are some recent bright spots to provide hope to potential job seekers withing the Charlotte region.
In an announcement made Wednesday, Celgard, a developer and producer of battery separators for lithium-ion batteries, announced that they will be bringing nearly 300 jobs to the area, expanding operations in Charlotte and building a new facility in Concord. The new Concord facility is expected to start construction later this year and will be located in the International Business Park on NC 73.
The Celuard announcement comes just a day after Convergys announced plans to hire 120 full-time workers at its call center in Hickory. These newest job announcements cap a good week for the region, and come not too long after Electrolux and Husqvarna announced that they were moving their headquarters to the region. In another bit of optimistic news for the Hickory region, financial services technology company Fiserv Inc. announced the opening of a customer support and client service center that will employ more than 400 people by the end of 2012.
The challenge for the job seeker is determining how this news applies to them. The Celgard jobs will pay very well, $56,950 on average, according to the announcement. This indicates that there is a pretty high skill ability involved. My encouragement to the job seeker is to look at how your skills and abilities match up with positions that will open. It’s likely to be a new field for most in the area, so you need to understand what you bring to the job that will cause them to be interested in you.
On the other hand, the positions at Covergys and Fiserv Inc. are call center positions. These are lower skilled positions, and they also have a higher turn-over than most. Convergys is looking for candidates with customer service experience, computer skills and the ability to work flexible hours. Convergys states that its employees start out earning approximately $9.50 an hour, plus benefits.
If any of this work appeals to you, I’d encourage you to look into applying. Take stock of your skills and abilities, along with your personality tendencies, and determine if you’re a good fit for the job. Assemble a plan to get the job and follow it. If the field interests you, then get the education required to work in that field. However, don’t underestimate the role your prior experience can have on you getting the job you desire.
