Former Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards has finally decided to fess up, admitting he’s the father of his mistress’ nearly two year old daughter. Only after The National Enquirer published pictures of him with his alleged mistress, Rielle Hunter, did Edwards admit to the affair. That was July 2008. He has always, however, denied he fathered her baby Frances Quinn…until now.
In September, aerochug.com reported the married Edwards was considering coming clean. Now, four months later he’s telling the world what most already suspected. In a statement to NBC News, the father of four five says he has spent time with Quinn over the past year. He says he was wrong to deny her as his daughter and he hopes for her forgiveness in the future. Edwards makes the admission as Quinn’s second birthday approaches next month. Quinn will turn two on February 27.
Perhaps more convenient for the fallen politician, he makes the admission as a tell-all book about the John Edwards paternity scandal is about to hit bookstores. The Politician is written by Andrew Young, a former aide and longtime friend of Edwards who says he went to extreme measures to cover up the scandal, including falsly admitting he fathered Quinn. On Amazon.com, where the book is currently available for pre-order, The Politician is described as:
“The underside of modern American politics — raw ambition, manipulation, and deception — are revealed in detail by Andrew Young’s riveting account of a presidential hopeful’s meteoric rise and scandalous fall…..Not only a moving personal account of Andrew Young’s political education, THE POLITICIAN offers a look at the trajectory which made John Edwards the ideal Democratic candidate for president, and the hubris which brought him down, leaving his career, his marriage and his dreams in ashes.”
The Politician goes on sale February 2.
In related news, NBC is reporting family friends of the Edwards’ confirm Elizabeth and John Edwards are separated, but still talk regularly. Elizabeth Edwards, who is battling cancer, has continued to stand by her husband of 32 year old and the father of her four children. For her part, Elizabeth has said if her husband fathered Quinn, “…that would be a part of John’s life, but not a part of mine.”
