Every year we make resolutions to do something better. Eat better, exercise. Call up old friends. Do something that scares us. Volunteer. Make a difference. Floss. Moisturize.
As you improve and evolve in other ways, shouldn’t your style?
If you set out to volunteer, have your wardrobe help out, too. Ben Stiller has been raising money to build a school in Haiti through Stillerstrong.org. You can buy a Derek Zoolander-approved headband to look just like your favorite male model, or just donate through credit card or text message. Funds will temporarily support diaster relief for the recent earthquake. Fashion Philanthropy is also donating 100% of their profits from purchases to Help for Haiti. Buy your next pair of shoes from TOMS and donate a pair to a child in need. For the next 48 hours, TOMS will donate $5 of every One for One purchase to disaster relief in Haiti through Partners in Health.
If you joined a gym or swore to eat better this year, try a service that helps you shop for higher quality merchandise conveniently. Hautelook.com offers both indie and high end fashion at healthy discounts, delivered straight to your inbox weekly.
If you’re planning on skydiving, bungee jumping, scuba diving or something equally adventurous, evaluate your fashion fears. Do you usually avoid anything studded, for example? Take a chance on something out of your ordinary look. (I did and it was worth it.)
If you promised to catch up with someone that you lost touch with, clean out your closet. Make three piles: Always wear, never wear and sometimes wear. Donate what you never wear, keep what you always wear and store what you sometimes wear for 2 weeks. You’ll start to notice what you miss right away and will be ready to give up some items for good.
If you planned to make a difference, make an entrance. If you know that you have a special event or find something that you can’t stop thinking about, make it a goal. If it’s an investment, invest wisely. Do your research, get recommendations, set aside money and stick to your schedule the way you do with your other goals. You’ll either get exactly what you wanted and you’ll have a wardrobe of priority fashion.
If you resolved to make a positive change in your life daily, find a watch that you love and wear it. The classic accessory elevates any daily look and some very cool timepieces can be found for very reasonable price points. Your cell phone is cool, but you use it enough. I’m talking to you, San Diego.
Finally, make the choice to never look at your closet and see nothing to wear again.
