Sophomore Bobby McCarthy, 16 years old, of Lacey Township is ranked third nationwide in the super heavyweight division, and it is only a matter of funding that separates him from competing for a national title in Independence, Missouri.
The youngster is hoping for his opportunity to compete in the Silver Gloves Tournament, but the six-foot, two-inch teen must raise $700-$800 to transport he and his coach to the tournament to be held from February 3rd-6th.
Bobby, nicknamed “The Bull,” competed in Colorado in the National Junior Olympic Tournament last June and finished with a bronze medal. A win at the Silver Gloves tournament could rank him the number one 16 year-old in the country for his weight class.
The boy’a coach, Shawn Darling, owner of Gladiator Boxing in Forked River, is doing his part by accepting donations as well as holding a beneficial fundraiser next week for McCarthy.
“Through generous donations he will be able to represent the state and bring home the national title this year,” said coach Darling.
McCarthy, a former Brooklyn native, has high hopes as he is both looking into boxing for the 2012 US Olympic Team and becoming a professional boxer by time he is a senior.
“I lived in Brooklyn before moving here four years ago. One day I was watching ‘Rocky’ on TNT and my mom later let me know about Gladiator Boxing. I got very excited,” said McCarthy about what motivated him to start boxing.
Bobby qualified for the Silver Gloves Tournament, but unfortunately, could not raise adequate funding to make it to the tournament.
“If I win this tournament I will be number one in the country,” said Bobby.
Coach Darling speaks highly of Bobby and has prepped his pupil with some of the best.
“He’s looking forward to the tournament this year,” said Darling. “After wearing out the other heavyweights in the gym we took trips to Atlantic City to spar with former heavyweight champ, Bruce Seldon.”
In addition to hopes to contend in the Silver Gloves tournament in Missouri next month, McCarthy is hoping to contend come October in San Antonio, Texas for the first qualification stage of the Olympics.
Darling and McCarthy’s fundraising event for the Silver Gloves Tournament will be held on the 29th of this month, and will be hosted in Darling’s Gladiator Gym located at 120 N Main St. in Forked River. Proceeds will go towards travel, lodging, and food expenses for the young boxer and his coach.
