The LDS Church provides disaster relief to Haiti after a massive earthquake hits. Tuesday, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit 10 miles west of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital at 4:53 pm. The damage has been devastating to the entire country. USGS geophysicist Kristin Marano called it the strongest earthquake to hit there since 1770.
Haiti has 9 million people and is a mostly desperately poor country, and in 2008 the mayor of Port-au-Prince stated that about 60% of the buildings there were built poorly and were unsafe in normal circumstances. The death toll currently unknown because many bodies have still not be foound, but it is estimated to be in the thousands.
Tuesday’s earthquake was also felt in the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba, but no major damage was reported there.
The Salt Lake City based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) has responded and said that no missionaries from the US are in Haiti, but that an immediate relief project will provide aid. In Haiti, the Caribbean Area Presidency will also provide immediate relief.
The Pope has urged aid to Haiti, President Obama has also offered aid, as well as the American Red Cross.
