Variety is said to be the spice of life. A statement that I would argue is absolutely true unless you’re Tiger Woods. Let’s inventory. We have an infinite choice of places to eat, libraries with every book ever written, outfits to wear, friends, multiple ways to kill ourselves, different media to choose from and the internet is variety embodied. We love variety, we’re human. The only place where variety cannot be found is talk radio Nashville.
Understood, it’s a small percentage of our population that regularly tune into talk, but those people spread the talking points, they help shape public opinion, they vote. They listen. They pay for subscriptions, they buy the books, they go to the road shows, they are a faithful following that hates our president with a white hot passion and that is a lucrative business.
Flip through the stations, you won’t find an opposing point of view. In Nashville, there are two conservative stations that pump up the hate almost 24 hours per day, one liberal show that only comes on 2 hours per week and then there’s the poorly produced, hard to listen to T.J. Graham show. Graham supports our president blindly and I’d rather eat my own finger then listen to his lunacy. Then there’s NPR, but I just can’t do it, NPR’s too literate for me. It’s plain to see on a Nashville level, the money is on the hate.
On a national level, there once was Air America, a talk radio network who tried to be the opposing view but couldn’t find its footing in our morning drive. Founded in 2004 Air America announced this week they’ll be shutting down operations and filing chapter 7. Air America Media chairman Charlie Kireker said on their website that the “difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America’s business.” Money woes had been the norm their 6 year run. Short on investors the network had filed chapter 11 in 2006. Bloggers wrote that talent also played a part in keeping Air America on the ground.
What about Variety?
On your radio, you can listen to music of every style. Do you need to save your soul, there’s Jesus radio. If you want a little news talk there is Conservative, or as I like to call it, no variety. Station owners are business men. So are advertisers. So are talk show hosts. They are in it for the money and in case haven’t you heard, the money is on the hate.
