The 16th Annual Wiregrass High School Home Run Derby will be held on Saturday, February 6, at 9 a.m. at the Rehobeth High School Baseball Field. The baseball field is located 9 miles southwest of Dothan just off Malvern Road.
This is the first year the Home Run Derby has been held at the renovated RHS Baseball Field.
The three local major leaguers who will be on hand for this year’s event include Dothan’s Gabe Gross of the Oakland A’s, former Northview standout Clint Robinson of the Kansas City Royals and Panama City, Fla. native Cody Johnson from the Atlanta Braves.
Advanced tickets for the Home Run Derby are $5. They can be bought at C&M Sporting Goods through the day of the Home Run Derby. C&M Sporting Goods is located on Westgate Parkway in Dothan.
Several of the top high school home run hitters in southeast Alabama, southwest Georgia and northwest Florida will be competing to get a chance to hit against the major leaguers during an exhibition in the championship round at 3 p.m.
Among the local players who will be participating in this year’s Home Run Derby include Chayne McClendon from Cottonwood High School, Justin Hancock of Enterprise High School, Craig Shirley from Northview High School, Chase Gilmore of Samson High School, Gavin Free of Opp High School, Cody Harrison from Holmes County (Fla.) High School, Garrett Stinson of Zion Chapel High School, Jim Cochran from Abbeville High School, Mitch Lucky of Emanuel Christian School in Dothan, Luke Miller from Wicksburg High School, Hunter Skipper of Rehobeth High School, Kyle Brown from Dothan Post 12, Shawn Cox of Abbeville Summer Baseball, Devin Jackson from Zion Chapel Dixie Majors, Hunter Aplin of Samson Summer Baseball, Jake Harrell from Rehobeth High School/Post 12 Junior Legion, Alex Watson of Rehobeth Summer Baseball, Anthony Sellers from Abbeville Christian Academy and Taylor Robinson of Wicksburg Summer Baseball.
Other players slated to appear include Justin Cullifer of Houston Academy, Preston Harris from Ashford Academy, Zach Byrd from Dale County High School, Hoke Granger of Providence Christian School, Gabriel Granger from Providence Christian Summer Baseball, Zac Fleming of Florala High School, Colby Johnson from Marianna (Fla.) High School, Tyler Eldreth of Enterprise Summer Baseball, Joe Sizemore from G.W. Long (Dale County) High School, Graham Dunlap of Skipperville Summer Baseball and Cody Maldonado from Eufaula High School.
