The free agency discussion is now underway with the season over. With all teams looking for the next best fit for their team for a Super Bowl run, finding the right players for the right team will be a challenging task for all organizations.
For the 49ers, the team could upgrade at nearly every position. Thanks to Josh Lobdell of the Sports Business Examiner, he has provided a list of this year’s free agency class.
We’re going to take a look at the defensive ends to see if any of these players could fit well with the 49ers as well.
New York Jets
New England Patriots
Kyle Vander Bosh
New York Giants
UFA=Unrestricted Free Agent, RFA= Restricted Free Agent, CBA= a player that will be an UFA if a new CBA is signed
Last off-season, there was a huge buzz as to whether or not the Carolina Panthers would be able to keep defensive end Julius Peppers. The Panthers decided to slap the franchise tag on Peppers and Peppers would have a Pro Bowl season. Now, with Peppers available on the market again, do the 49ers pursue him?
Last year, the team looked for a pass rusher and Peppers fit the bill. The team found solid play from their pass rushers in 2008 and had decent success with it this past season. With Peppers looking for a 3-4 defense to join and the 49ers employing such, would it make sense for the 49ers to add Peppers in as a pass rushing linebacker or a defensive end?
A few other names that stick out on this list is Adewale Ogunleye, Richard Seymour, Kyle Vander Bosh and Frostee Rucker. Each of these players have played very well over the past seasons. The problem with adding such talent is the whether or not the 49ers want to go that route.
The team has a solid line to begin with and trying to add a name to the mis might hurt the 49ers. Justin Smith is coming off a Pro Bowl season and Isaac Sopoaga has been very consistent in his time with the 49ers. The 49ers might not even entertain the idea of adding a defensive end knowing that youngsters like Ray McDonald and Ricky Jean-Francois could play important roles for the team in future seasons.
Adding a free agent defensive end might clutter up the current roster for the team. It will be interesting to see how much desire the 49ers have in trying to beef up their defensve via free agency.
