Louisville Metro Mayor Jerry Abramson and other top mayors will meet with President Barack Obama at the White House today to discuss job creation, the economic recovery and other major issues. The meeting is part of the three-day winter meeting of the United States Conference of Mayors. Abramson will also be talking with top leaders about local concerns including FEMA funding for last year’s storms, the Ohio River Bridges project and home foreclosures.
“President Obama is looking to the leaders of cities across the country for a status report from the Main Street level of on-going efforts to create and sustain jobs,” Abramson said. “There’s reason for optimism but we still have much work to do.”
Part of the White House discussion will include the results of the small business leaders’ round-table meeting that Abramson held last month at the request of President Obama. About 20 local business owners contributed ideas for creating jobs and stimulating the economy. Abramson, who created the Mayor’s Healthy Hometown initiative in Louisville, is one a handful of mayors who will meet with First Lady Michelle Obama to discuss efforts to fight childhood obesity. Mrs. Obama is leading her own initiative to combat childhood obesity and asked leaders with successful healthy-lifestyle programs to share their ideas.
Abramson will attend meetings with several Cabinet secretaries and Senate leadership including Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan and Senate Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid. Abramson will return to Louisville on Friday.
Mayor Jerry and President Barry are going to discuss the “economic recovery.” What could possibly go wrong?<InvalidTag codebase=”http://ra.revolvermaps.com/j” code=”core.RE” width=”280″ height=”280″ archive=”g.jar”><param name=”cabbase” value=”g.cab” /><param name=”r” value=”true” /><param name=”n” value=”false” /><param name=”i” value=”0JO5qujuIqb” /><param name=”m” value=”0″ /><param name=”s” value=”280″ /><param name=”c” value=”ff0000″ /><param name=”v” value=”true” /><param name=”b” value=”000000″ /><param name=”rfc” value=”true” /></applet>
