Eurostar announces changes
The VC Union and Lufthansa management have agreed to hold the strike and try to work their differences out. The walkout is now suspended until March 9, 2010.
Lufthansa Airlines is on strike for four days this week, beginning Monday, February 22, 2010.
The walkout has been called on behalf of the pilots union and affects a minimum of 800 flights each day.
Passengers with tickets for Lufthansa flights dated Feb. 22 through Feb. 25 should call 1-800-850-6070 or log onto www.lufthansa.com to find out if their flight has been affected by this strike.
Passengers with cancelled flights will be able to rebook without additional charges as long as the ticket was purchased before Feb. 18 and travel is to take place before May 31, 2010.
The Vereinigung Cockpit Union could not come to agreement with management over the issues of higher salary and job security. The 4,000 striking pilots have not had a contract since last March and bargained for a 6.4 percent increase in pay. They were also seeking reassurance that their jobs would not be transferred to other Lufthansa subsidiaries with lower pay structures, such as Austrian Airlines and British Midland.
Jorg Handweg, VC union representative and fellow pilot, advised, “Vereinigung Cockpit attempted two times to get the Lufthansa management to continue negotiations but in the end it showed clearly that Lufthansa is not interested and looks for the confrontation. Now they’ve got it.”
More than 90 percent of the union members voted to strike, a move that will cost the airline approximately $34 million per day. While two thirds of the flights cancelled are within Europe, one third are international.
