The most delicious woman crossed my path last week. I was perusing the scene at Mystic Journey Bookstore on Abbot Kinney when in walked a woman with a gorgeous main of flowing red locks. She had a smile on her face and a basket full of magical cookies.
Her name was Francie and she was selling Francie’s Magic Cookies.
I don’t usually get excited about cookies. I adore cupcakes, pastries, chocolate, ice cream, and other sweet delicacies but cookies never got my taste buds salivating like the rest of my guilty pleasures. Until now.
What first took me in about these cookies was that they are intention cookies. I’d heard of intention chocolate but never cookies. I love the idea of cookies being more then just good for my sugary cravings. If I choose to believe, these cookies will bring something wonderful into my body, mind and soul. Choose Coconut for Love, or Peanut Butter for Abundance, or Chocolate for Sex (my favorite), or several other wonderful intentions.
When I asked Francie how she got the intentions into the cookies, she explained that when she was a young child growing up in India and Sri Lanka, she was taught to ‘do’ consciousness by a Hindu holy man. Years later, these early childhood lessons, which she’d kept with her, carried over to her wonderfully unexpected life as a cookie maker.
“I hold awareness around the cookies as I make them and peddle them,” Francie explained to me over email. “The truth? I feel that the ‘powers’ are truly up to the recipient. Somehow being guided that these cookies have powers, the consumer creates his or her own magic.”
So, if the person is willing to be open to the magic in the cookies, the intention will come into their life. For some, this may sound too hokey or new age. For others, it may sound enchanting and perfect.
No matter if you’re a believer or not, it doesn’t change how melt-in-your-mouth scrumptious these cookies are. They are so sweet and chewy that they dissolve on your tongue before you can swallow the sweetness down.
Francie and her magic cookies have become regulars on the streets in and around Santa Monica. Her longtime customers are loyal and eager. They “wait for me. And they wait. They come with cash, they skip lunch, they tell me their magic stories of the week,” Francie writes, describing her loyal and loving customers’ obsession with her cookies.
Want to try one (or more) of these mystical cookies? You can order them on her website or meet her in person on her weekly tour of Santa Monica and surrounding cities. Her weekly routine entails a visit to Abbot Kinney on Sundays, Robertson on Tuesdays, Montana Ave on Thursdays, Malibu on Fridays, Main Street Santa Monica and the 3rd Street Promenade on Saturdays.
If you don’t live in Santa Monica, don’t worry. She’s coming to a Whole Foods near you. And this cookie is a whole food. Full of pure ingredients, pure intentions, and pure perfection.
