If your new year’s resolution was to get out of debt, you have lots of options. You can certainly create a budget, read up on money-saving tips from the experts, transfer your credit card balances to a zero-interest card, and start a savings account. But to kick things off on a funkier note, why not throw a direct sales home party? You’ll have an excuse to hang out with friends and you’ll make a little cash too.
Some popular direct sales companies that service the Greater Boston area include Avon, Pampered Chef, Silpada, and Tupperware . A representative from the company typically showcases the products for your friends and family through games, trivia, and contests. You provide food, drinks, and a space to gather, and you’ve got an instant party! Hostesses typically earn money or products based on how much their guests buy.
Laurie Brown, a former Boston-area resident, used to host direct sales parties often. Hosting the parties “wasn’t as much about the merchandise, though it was okay; we were all about having a reason to get together” says Brown.
At-home direct sales parties can easily help you cross two New Year’s resolutions off your list: spending more time with friends and family and making a little extra cash. If you’re really hoping to get out of debt, consider taking direct sales a step further and sign up to be a demonstrator after the party.
Norwood resident, Bea (who prefers not to use her last name), says that selling Avon helped her accrue some “fun money” so that she didn’t feel like she had to use her credit card to buy movies or go out to dinner.
“Avon only required a $10 investment,” Bea says. “I sold to my friends, colleagues, and neighbors and made about $250 a month. That money was more than enough to satisfy entertainment needs and I got to host parties at my home and the homes of my friends.” Though Bea hasn’t sold Avon recently, she’s thinking about getting back in the business with the economy the way it is now.
