Spark speaks on easy herbs for Austin
An anonymous Pagan demonstrates using a pendulum
On Satuday, January 16, 2010 Austin Pagans met for a weekend workshop. They came out from behind their computers, stepped out of their mundane lives, and came together. Pagans living north of the river joined with Pagans living south of the river to meet and learn, to become better themselves and to contribute to the betterment of the Pagan community in Austin.
Participants were members of the North Austin Pagan Meet-up Group, the South Austin Pagan Meet-up Group, or the Austin/ Bastrop Asatru Meet-up Group. The workshop, organized by Torvald Adolphson, is just one in a series. These workshops are held twice a year — once in January and once in July. The goal of each workshop is to share “101” type information on a variety of topics that Pagans or Heathens might find interesting.
The winter workshop featured four presenters. The schedule was as follows:
- Growing your own herbs for magickal and culinary purposes (by Spark Freyasdottir)
- Rediscovering our common culture (by Torvald Adolphson)
- Dowsing with a pendulum (by Anonymous Pagan)
- Pronouncing Irish and getting started in Celtic mythology (by Ceana Luighseach)
The group took advantage of its small size to really be involved in the presentations. People easily asked questions and made comments, becoming active participants as opposed to passive observers. Especially during the presentation about our culture, people had opinions to share — political views, social values, and teenagers are topics people are passionate about.
Between presentations, everyone took the time to make new friends or get reacquainted with someone they had not seen since the last workshop. They swapped contact information and offered invitations to get involved in other Pagan activities in Austin. At one end of the room was the snack table and at the other end of the room was a “swap meet” table. Many of the workshop attendees brought items from home that they no longer needed and made them available to others. Although mostly books this time, the “swap meet” table included shirts and tarot cards, too.
The next workshop in the series will take place in July. Refreshments and the “swap meet” will be provided again. Of course, it will have another line-up of presenters sharing their knowledge and experience with the larger Pagan community. Spark Freyasdottir is already planning another presentation about herbs. Her segment has been a regular part of the workshop since it began a few years ago. Ceana Luighseach’s presentation is also expected to be the first in an ongoing series.
