Michael Jackson included in ‘We Are the World 25 for Haiti’ song and video – The ‘We Are the World 25 for Haiti’ video premiered during the NBC coverage of the XXI Olympiad Opening Ceremonies Friday evening, and Michael Jackson, who co-wrote the song that was originally recorded in 1985, was included. He was the only artist whose voice and image were brought in from the previous recording to the new one that was produced as a fundraiser for Haiti earthquake relief.
The appearance is a clip of Mr. Jackson singing from the first video in 1985. The camera pans up his costume–his black loafers with sequined socks, black pants and a glittering gold and black military-style jacket, complete with his signature sequined glove–to show a smiling Jackson singing the song he co-wrote with Lionel Richie. The screen splits then and Janet Jackson, the artist’s sister wearing simple black, sings beside the image of her brother. All of Mr. Jackson’s original sung lines in the song and solo images from the video are remixed into the new one and kept intact.
The segment that aired Friday night is only a portion of the complete video, which runs over 7 minutes in the iTunes version. Downloads of the song and the video benefit Haiti earthquake relief.
“We Are the World 25 for Haiti” is a remake of the original philanthropic anthem, “We Are the World,” co-written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and recorded in 1985 for USA for Africa, an organization established to aid famine relief in Africa. On February 1, 2010, over 70 artists got together at the same studio in Los Angeles (Jim Henson Recording Studios; formerly A&M) where the original song was recorded and performed the song under the supervision of Richie and Quincy Jones, who was also involved in the original.
Donations may also be made by purchasing music, videos, and other items at the foundation’s website: www.world25.org.
