During a brief introduction and tour of Middleton High School I see lots of good things going on. This magnet school that specializes in “Science and Technology “is moving up the ladder to success. Recently a new principal “Mr. Owen Young” has been appointed to Middleton. It has been about a year since he took over as the new chief of staff. And from speaking to teachers and students, I see lots of excitement and smiling faces on campus despite the rumors that have been going around. It seems Mr.Young has the right recipe that could turn things around “positively speaking”, and make this magnet school a place these students could call home.
At Middleton’s most recent open house my first stop was the Engineering department. I had the pleasure to meet Billy Joe Quiroz a Junior at Middleton. I was able to watch Billy Joe guide a robotic arm.
Listed below are a few of the electives in engineering:
- Introduction to Engineering
- Principals of Engineering
- Digital Engineering
- Computer Integrated Manufacturing
- Civil Engineering and Architecture
- Engineering Design & Development
- Aerospace Engineering
- Biotechnical Engineering
Many engineering students also take courses in Drafting-AutoCAD to better prepare for acceptance in colleges throughout the country.
Students can join the robotics team “MINOTAUR ” or join the winning math team “Mu Alpha Theta”. The math team has been #1 in the country for the past 3 years and they have competed in Hawaii, California and Colorado.
A local engineering firm gets involved in Middleton’s magnet program. Presently “CH2MHILL”, has partnered with Middleton High School. This program allows students to connect with the engineering mentors and form their own construction company. The students are broken up into 4 teams and each team will prepare a bid. During all the preparation they meet regularly with their team mentor. The final bid is then submitted to a panel of judges and they must do a presentation. The winning team will be awarded a scholarship.
Middleton Magnet is presently recruiting new students. The online application period begins on January 12, 2010.
