One of the pleasures of dining out is that your tastebuds get to enjoy traveling to exotic places around the world without you ever having to life even a little finger to pack a suitcase!
We recently explored New Zealand, thanks to the culinary talents of Chef Robert Lia and his staff at McCormick & Schmick’s in Burbank. Their “Explore New Zealand ” promotion gives the diner four different flavor choices, along with wine pairings and dessert from this beautiful and unspoiled country.
Greenshell Mussel Fritter is nicely accented with a cilantro-roasted garlic pesto for starters, or share the Riesling Steamed Shellfish Stew as an appetizer for two rather than entrée. A sourdough bread bowl is piled high with signature greenshell mussels, and a medley of tender scallops, shrimp and clams in a tasty but light Riesling cream broth.
You have your choice of surf or turf for the main show — we chose the Grass-fed Filet Mignon, served Wellington Style with Kiwi Blue Cheese-Onion Tart. It was melt in your mouth delicious, with deep, rich flavors that contrasted nicely to the puff pastry topping. Our guest opted for the King Salmon harvested from New Zealand’s Marlborough Sounds and presented in a simple grilled presentation with caramelized apple and Sauvignon Blanc reduction. This salmon has a creamy smooth consistency with a buttery melt-in-your mouth quality, a perfect counterpart to al dente vegetables on the side.
The restaurant is featuring a fruity Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir from The Crossings, earthy and spicy, available by the glass (5 or 8 ounc pours) or the bottle to accompany your selections.
The national dessert of New Zealand, Pavlova, a heavenly light meringue creation that almost floats up and off the plate is a must-have dessert, paired with one of the New Zealand signature cocktails, a Rum/lemon juice Kiwi Quencher, or a creamy liquid Kiwi Meringue Pie blending Stoli Vanil with Monin Kiwi, simple syrup and lemon juice, topped with whipped cream.
The classic dark woods and clubby atmosphere of the Burbank location makes this seafood house the prefect place to decompress at the end of a long week. Service is professional and attentive and never lags from authentic welcome greeting to the end of the meal. Sign up for preferred guest membership before you leave and there are all sort of benefits to entice you to return again – and often.
McCormick & Schmick’s Burbank is located at Central Park, 3500 West Olive Avenue in Burbank, (818) 260-0505. Underground garage (enter on Avon from Riverside) or street parking.
