Update on Barbaro’s Brother – PA-Owned Lentenor
Delaware and Pennsylvania residents are watching the early days of Barbaro’s full brother Lentenor as he begins his racing career. Lentenor ran a close second to Doubles Partner at Gulfstream Park on Wednesday, 2/17, his fourth race.
Lentenor was running on turf and the reviews of his race are mixed. Jockey John Velazquez took Lentenor outside as the field rounded the far turn, clocking a time of 1:13.61 for the first three-quarters of a mile and running the race at more than 4 seconds off the course record. Lentenor is a Triple Crown nominee; his next race may be the Florida Derby on March 20th. Another race of 1 1/8 miles for 3-year-olds, the Florida Derby is also one of the major preparation races for the Kentucky Derby, which will be May 1.
Like Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, Lentenor is owned by Roy and Gretchen Jackson and trained by Michael Matz. Barbaro, who won the Kentucky Derby by more than 6 lengths, suffered a break to his right, rear ankle in the 2006 Preakness. He was euthanized 8 months later due to complications from the injury..
