Dear Bible Girl,
Q: I’m seeing a lot of movies about 2012, demons, the end of the world, Armageddon and stuff. My question is what does the Bible say about all this and are any of those movies right? Jason P.
A: In the previous article, the scroll with seven seals is opened by the only one worthy to do so; Jesus. In essence, what comes forth are commonly known as the four horsemen of the Apocalypse. They bring with them first a warning, then death, famine and disease. John witnesses the martyrs of Christ given white robes of righteousness and Jewish believers “sealed” or protected by God from what is to come. The sixth seal, perhaps the most devastating, is an earthquake of such magnitude, that mountains and islands are unseated, and the strongest together with the weakest of society huddle together and pray for death. As bad as these things seem, it is only the beginning.
As the seventh seal is broken, all heaven is hushed for a thirty minute period. Imagine the terror of what is to come! The seventh seal ushers in seven judgments called the “trumpet judgments” which are extremely violent disturbances of nature. Seven angels are given seven trumpets. “The first angel sounded; And hail and fire followed, mingled with blood, and they were thrown to the earth. And a third of the trees were burned up, and all green grass was burned up.” (Revelation Chapter 8 verse 7) As each angel sounds his trumpet, devastating disasters befall the earth. Second after the fire and hail, Scripture tells of “something” like a great fiery mountain falling into the sea causing one third of the earth’s oceans to become blood. The Scripture does not say that the ocean will be as blood, but will become blood! Because of this, a third of all sea creatures die and a third of all ships at sea are destroyed.
The third trumpet sounds and, “…a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch…” The Bible gives this “star” (most likely a huge meteor) a name; Wormwood. It turns a third of the rivers “bitter” or poisonous. The fourth trumpet brings damage to the sun, moon and stars so that they give only a fraction of their usual light, plunging all into semi- darkness. Imagine the state of the world at this point. No food, no water, darkness, death and woe. Yet the worst is to come, because while the first of the judgments affected the natural world, the last affect man himself. “And I looked, and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven saying with a loud voice, “Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the three angels who are about to sound!” (Revelation Chapter 8 verse 13) Next John sees a star falling from heaven to earth, and this star has the key to the bottomless pit, which is opened. The “star” is Satan and as he opens the pit huge billows of smoke come forth that snuff out the sun and pollute the air. Horrid demonic forces are released from the pit the first of which are locust-like creatures who are commanded by God to harm men, but not all men; those who were sealed are protected. These creatures will sting like a scorpion, but no one will die from it. “In those days, men will seek death and will not find it; they will desire to die, and death will flee from them.” (Revelation Chapter 9 verse 6) These creatures will plague men for five months. This is the fifth trumpet judgment. The sixth trumpet sounds and four angels who had been appointed by God release the army of the horsemen whose number is 200 million. They are given power to kill a third of mankind. These are not ordinary horsemen, but terrifying demonic creatures. The Bible describes the horses themselves as having the head of a lion, and whip-like serpentine tails.
As the seventh trumpet is blown, the reign of Christ begins, and the final act commences. At this point, many people shake their heads and wonder why a so called loving God would wreck havoc on the world and all the people in it.
Throughout the ages, God has warned us of the consequences of sin, both here on earth, and in the eternal realm. Patiently God warns and waits, sometimes centuries for mankind to turn away from sin and turn to Him. Yet always when the shoe drops and the consequences actually happen, people cry out, “Why me? I’m a good person!” The Bible says that there are no “good” people, that we all fall short of God’s perfect and holy expectations, and the truth is, we do! This makes lots of people angry, but truth usually does. Not one of us is free from sin, the worst of which is when we tell God, “I don’t need you.”
So, according to Revelation, why were some people “sealed” or protected from all the horror? Because at one point, each one of those people looked deep into their heart and realized they were up to their eyeballs in sin, and they ASKED God to FORGIVE them. Then they REPENTED and from that moment on, tried to live in such a way that honored God. As humans, we trip and fall and screw up a thousand times, but the DIFFERENCE is, those who honor God WANT a relationship with Him because they know having that relationship gives them peace on this earth, and a place in heaven. It doesn’t mean that God acts as a magic genie giving people all that they want when they want it, or that there will be no suffering while on earth. It does mean that no matter what happens, God brings peace and reassurance that none of us is alone in this life.
The capacity for human pride and arrogance is astounding. In the days of the trials and tribulations of the end of this world, the Bible says, “But the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, that they should not worship demons, and idols of gold, silver, brass, stone and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk. And they did not repent of their murders or their sorceries or their sexual immorality or their thefts.” (Revelation Chapter 9 verses 20-21) Imagine a world decimated by natural and physical terrors and yet, John reveals that men and women still shake their fists at God in anger and will not turn from their sin.
In the entire history of mankind, the same sins plague us over and over again. We fight the same wars, kill for the same reasons, cheat, lie, steal and behave immorally just like at the start of civilization. The underlying TRUTH is, we cannot save ourselves, nor can we redeem ourselves. It is not a matter of greater technology or superior eugenics, but rather, a matter of the heart. There is only one name under heaven to which has been given the power to redeem, and His name is Jesus. In the last article of this series, the plan for redemption and the new age is revealed.
