Some of Pittsburgh’s finest musicians are gathering this Sunday, January 24th, to raise money for the victims of the devastating earthquake that ravaged the island nation of Haiti ten days ago.
The Haiti Benefit concert will be held at Fate Lounge, formerly Rosebud, on Smallman Street in the Strip District. Doors will open at 2 PM, with the first act, The Imposter Band, kicking the show off at 2:30PM. Other artists rocking to support the cause include Shari Richards, Anthony Rankin, Justin Sellers and the Vagrants, Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers and more, with Walter Ino closing out the days festivities.
The level of poverty and the lack of construction standards that have plagued Haiti are in full exposure after the 7.0 quake hit just ten miles west of Port-Au-Prince. Nearly 80% of Haitians live below the poverty line, and of the nation’s 14 airports, only four have paved runways. More than 3 million people are still in need of medical attention, with more than that needing what one might consider basic items for survival, like clean water, clothes, and food. Before the quake hit, 380,000 Haitian children were orphans. It is impossible to calculate through the chaos, how much that number has grown in recent days. American Armed Forces, The Red Cross, and U.N. peacekeepers among others are working tirelessly to get aid to those who need it, and in Pittsburgh, we can do our part as well. A minimum donation of $10 is being asked to attend the event, but clothes, bottled water, and non-perishable food items are welcome as well.
In a time where we have so much to worry about for ourselves, do not lose sight that though Haiti is thousands of miles away from our fair city, our brothers and sisters in humanity are suffering and are in need of our help. When you start to question why you should help someone of another country when so many in our own are suffering, come and enjoy the concert this Sunday at Fate Lounge, and then volunteer at your local food bank, donate to causes supporting those still struggling in New Orleans, lend your time to a literacy program in your neighborhood and if there isn’t one, start one; volunteer at a children’s hospital or a senior center to help ease your country’s pain as well. In a disaster this epic, it still holds true that every little bit helps.
