Robin Roberts spoke with good friend of Tiger Woods, Notah Begay III, on “Good Morning America.” The three-time All-American, friend and teammate of Tiger Woods talked about his thoughts concerning Tiger’s future in golf and where he goes from here.
Notah Begay III was in the front row during the press conference and explained that he got choked up as Tiger Woods openly apologized for his past indiscretions. He said that the press conference was tough to watch, especially since the two have been friends for the last 12-13 years. “This was his first step towards reconciliation, and I was so proud of him,” Begay told Robin Roberts on “Good Morning America.” When asked why Woods expressed little emotion during the conference, Begay explained, “The fact of the matter is that Tiger doesn’t get emotional at these press conferences.”
The good friend went on to defend Tiger Woods, his long time friend and mentor. “Amazingly enough, he exceeded everyone’s expectations. Along with that, he’s had opportunities, pitfalls and temptations,” he stated. Begay also said that he was surprised by everything that has come out in the last few months.
Notah Begay III told Roberts that he has not spoken to Tiger Woods since last Friday when the two embraced and shared a few private words immediately following the press conference. He said that his wife has reached out to Elin to offer words of encouragement. “They deal with things internally and privately,” he added.
When asked if other golfers would welcome Tiger Woods back upon his return, Begay said that the majority would, however, he added, “There will always be some fans that won’t agree with him, no matter what he does. Tiger must now enter another phase of reaction and therapeutic healing,” Tiger’s good friend explained.
Notah Begay III was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. While attending Stanford University, Begay and Woods played together as teammates on the 1994 NCAA championship golf team. Begay turned professional in 1995, and is the only full-blooded American Indian golfer on the PGA tour.
