About the Presenter
Dr. Gary B. Mesibov is currently the Director of Division TEACCH at the UNC School of Medicine. This internationally recognized statewide program is one of a kind in its pioneering approaches to research, service, training, treatment and the education of individuals with autism. Dr. Mesibov also serves as Professor of Psychology, Department of Psychiatry, and Clinical Professor, Department of Psychology.
Structured Teaching, developed by Division TEACCH of The University of North Carolina, understands ASD as neurologically based differences in the ways that students think, learn, and understand. These brain differences often result in school problems because educational programs are geared toward typical learners. This presentation will describe those differences and explain educational strategies that are better suited to the ways that students with ASD learn and understand. Specific evidence-based strategies for organizing classrooms and teaching a wide variety of skills will be emphasized.
- To understand neuropsychological differences between students with ASD and typical learners with specific implications for learning, and understanding.
- To learn the general concepts of the Structured Teaching approach and how it fits specific learning styles and differences in ASD.
- To learn how to apply these strategies to teach a range of skills that are typically problematic for students with ASD.
