Chicken Soup – This gold standard of our grandmother’s is getting some backing from the research community. Chicken soup is being touted by testers for having anti-inflammatory properties that stop white blood cells from triggering inflammation in the respiratory tract and in addition containing amino acids that help against respiratory infections.
Salt water Gargle – Try celtic sea salt – Gargling with salt water will ease a sore throat and celtic sea salt contains almost 80 vital nutrients and minerals. Unlike it’s better known counterparts, celtic sea salt can provide electrolytes, strengthen immune response and aid in food absorption.
Hydrate with water – Keeping enough fluids in your system will ease chest congestion symptoms. Keep a glass of water filled and sip. If you find it a hard task, set a timer to make sure the glass is empty each hour. The time will sneak up on you and you’ll be amazed at how effective this simple step is.
Humidify the air – Home heating in winter months, in particular forced hot air heating, will dry the air and your nasal and mucus passages. Keeping a home humidifier running will simply make you feel better.
Use a saline rinse – The use of a neti pot filled with saline is an old Ayruvedic/Yoga practice that has been introduced to the United States with the resurgence of Yoga classes. Neti pots can be found in health stores and are effective in keeping nasal passages clear and moist.
Rest – Here is something your grandmother would have stressed, but in our fast paced society, is hard to accomplish. The next time you feel a cold coming on, it’s best to stay home. You will be giving yourself a better chance of shortening the severity and length of your illness, not spreading the cold or flu to others will be the greatest benefit of all.
